You won't save much money doing a grow on inverters over mains power no. The amount of solar panels and batteries needed makes it nonviable for running lights. As a supplemental power source it can save a few dollars running fans and pumps etc (the initial outlay for the equipment needed has to be taken into account and takes a fair while to recoup)

Fair enough... I suppose it would take many many years for a solar system to pay for itself, and battery technology is nowhere near up to scratch.

Inverters introduce losses (about 95% efficiency)... 1000W @ 24v, 12v, 240v whatever voltage is still 1000W

 

Remember Power (W) = Volt x Amp (A)

 

Running your 1000W at 240V draws 4.17 Amps

 

Trying to get 1000W at 24V is 41.7 Amps!! Well beyond the means of your average home cabling and switching components

 

Plus for the inverter to get out 1000W it'd need to be drawing about 1050 to make up for the losses in the conversion

 

Just wanted to put that out there for anyone seeing the claims about saving heaps from wasting any time on it.... if there were power savings to be made simply by changing voltages it'd be exceedingly well documented by now.
