Drugs seized from Aboriginal elder in NT

Northern Territory police have seized 16 kilograms of kava that was en route to a remote island community.

 

A well respected 56-year-old Aboriginal elder was arrested in relation to the haul.

 

Police from Ramingining in Arnhem Land stopped a Toyota landcruiser at Barge Landing Road on Good Friday.

 

About 16kgs of kava were found, as well as a small amount of cannabis, a police spokeswoman said.

 

"The kava had a street value of $16,000 and was headed for Milingimbi Island before it was intercepted by police," she said in a statement released on Monday.

 

Superintendent Helen Braam said people were clearly not getting the message about drugs in the community.

 

"Kava is a drug - it has serious medical and social repercussions for the community," she said.

 

"The police will continue to disrupt and target drug dealers in the community - no matter who they are or what their standing is in the community."

 

While police would not reveal the man's identity, Supt Braam said it was not the first time respected Arnhem Land community members had been involved in drug or grog running.

 

"I would expect that respected people in the community would be part of the solution not the problem," she said.

 

"The members of the Katherine and Northern Regional Command are working hard with key representatives across the region to put in place mutual respect protocols that will guide the way police and community work together to address crime issues, and this includes the running of cannabis, grog and kava.

 

"People who behave in this manner undermine and devalue this whole process."

 

The man was charged with possessing a trafficable amount of kava, supplying kava without a license and possessing cannabis. He will appear in court in May.

funny i always heard good things about kava. ive even brought it over the counter in shops or is there a harder version of it?

Same thing but it's banned in a lot of communities, they have a lot of problems with substance abuse. I've seen a few petrol sniffers and they were propper fucked up as in fried brains, brain damaged couldn't walk or talk properly or feed themselves, slured speach etc.

 

A percentage of people in the communities would eat dog turds if they could get high from it. It's a pretty fucked up situation.

Kava seems to be a pretty harmless "drug".

I'd just like to update,

I went to my local health food store and scored Kava Kava extract, it was there right on the shelf for you to stick your hand out, grab it and buy.

I was surprised to see it there but I got it anyway even tho it was a bit pricey.

The lady at the store said that it was uncommon and not too popular but she can always get it.

I was asked why I needed it and I said it was for anxiety, she replied that this would really help with that. And it did.

 

I didn't have the cops wrestle me to the ground and chuck me in the back of their van once I left the store either. Bonus!

 

So my question is did I just get lucky or is there differing state/territory laws?
