Pot doesn't harm the brain

Recommended Posts

Smoking marijuana does not cause long-term harm to the brain, researchers from the University of California in San Diego have found.

The findings, concluded from 15 different studies using well-educated young people to assess the long term impact of the drug on adults' neurocognitive abilities, will be published in the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society's July edition.

"We were interested in the question of safety from a neurological point of view" of users of marijuana over a long period of time, said Igor Gray, a professor of psychiatry who led the study.

According to the results, though marijuana causes short term harm to memory and learning - part of the brain's selective memory functions - it does not cause permanent brain damage.

"If there is an effect it is very small," Gray said.

The state of California approved a law in 1996 that allows physicians to prescribe cannabis for some patients. A number of US studies currently underway are examining the effects of cannabis and its use as a medicinal drug.

Some 704 frequent users of marijuana took part in the survey, as well as 500 people who had never tried it.

hi Hardcore...

According to the results, though marijuana causes short term harm to memory and learning - part of the brain's selective memory functions - it does not cause permanent brain damage.

I would have to agree here, I have actually taken a break from choofin because it really got bad for me, one second I would be thinking something , next, my train of thought would desert me and I would have no idea what I was just thinking about. Especially if it was something important and half-way thru I got distracted, I found sometimes it would be very hard to back-track so Ive decided to give my brain recipricals (sp?) time to rejuvenate, and already after 3-4 weeks I see a vast improvement in my short-term memory.

cheers

Note that the study was done on adults......

Hers another study done on mice which is meant to be representative of teenagers. I do in part agree with it personally which is why I am against teenagers smoking and drinking before their brains have properly developed. Of course the fact it was dont on rats may cast doubts on the research data but I dont know many parents that would let their kids be tested do you?

The Advertiser 2 July

Teenagers using mj before their brains have finsihed growing risk permanent memory problems.

Aussie researchers working with rats have found a link between mj use and changed brain function.

The UNi of New England study also found adolescent rats exposed to mj were less social and probably more anxious.

Dr Paul Mallet said that, with repeated exposure, it appeared neural activity in many parts of the brain changes in a fairly permanent manner.

We were talking about its better being an adult than a rat if you smoke mj.

This article has a positive that most people have not noticed. If your house is always full of mj smoke you will not have a rat problem because they will all be lonley sad anxious rats that commit suicide.
