Some interesting new findings

Recommended Posts

Fair enough this isn't Canna related. But it similar in regards to medicinal extracts from other plants for either possible cures or general well-being. It's quite refreshing news that science is looking towards natural remedies, than the same old synthetic crap they like to palm off onto us. Anyway, enough outta me. I'll let the reports do the talking. :punk:

Researchers back cancer-fighting properties of papaya

RESEARCHERS said overnight that papaya leaf extract and its tea have dramatic cancer-fighting properties against a broad range of tumours, backing a belief held in a number of folk traditions.

University of Florida researcher Nam Dang and colleagues in Japan, in a report published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, documented papaya's anti-cancer effect against tumours of the cervix, breast, liver, lung and pancreas.

The researchers used an extract made from dried papaya leaves, and the effects were stronger when cells received larger doses of papaya leaf tea.

Dr Dang and the other scientists showed that papaya leaf extract boosts the production of key signalling molecules called Th1-type cytokines, which help regulate the immune system.

This could lead to therapeutic treatments that use the immune system to fight cancers, they said in the February issue of the journal and released overnight by the university.

Papaya has been used as a folk remedy for a variety of ailments in many parts of the world, especially Asia.

Dr Deng said the results are consistent with reports from indigenous populations in Australia and his native Vietnam.

The researchers said papaya extract did not have any toxic effects on normal cells, avoiding a common side effect of many cancer treatments.

Researchers exposed 10 different types of cancer cell cultures to four strengths of papaya leaf extract and measured the effect after 24 hours. Papaya slowed the growth of tumours in all the cultures.

Dr Dang and a colleague have applied to patent the process to distill the papaya extract through the University of Tokyo.

Gold Coast boffins sold on lemongrass

RESEARCHERS have discovered native lemongrass is as potent as aspirin in relieving headaches and migraines. Scientists at Griffith University looked at 30 plant species used by Indigenous Australians to see which stacked up in the medicine world.

Native lemongrass or cymbopogon ambiguus -- not the Asian kind found in supermarkets -- had the most potential for medicinal benefits and the most potency.

The five-year study was conducted by Professor Lyn Griffiths, Dr Darren Grice and Dr Kelly Rogers.

Dr Grice from the Institute for Glycomics said the research validated the plant's therapeutic values.

"Headaches and migraines cause abnormal activities in our bodies, such as altering our serotonin levels and interfering with the normal function of our blood platelets," he said.

Platelets clump together for wound repair but they can also form life-threatening internal clots, starving the brain of oxygen and causing strokes.

"We tested extracts of the plant on human blood platelets and one fraction showed strong biological activity," said Dr Grice.

"It was caused by the compound eugenol in the native lemongrass plant, which is significant as the compound showed similar activity to aspirin.

"The compound inhibits platelets clumping together and the release of serotonin."

Serotonin regulates mood, appetite, sleep, muscle contraction, and cognitive functions including memory.

Dr Grice said most traditional medicines had not been studied in-depth and many plants had unknown therapeutic values.

"Nature's medicines hold enormous potential to cure health problems and traditional medicines are a source of good leads for new scientific discovery," he said.

Dr Grice said they would not look at marketing the product commercially but the lemongrass would be best consumed if heated in boiling water.

The findings were reported in the most recent edition of the academic journal Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

my dad use to make it for mum when she had breast cancer

he told i bout it

Don't allways let the headlines do the talking, All of you should every now and then tell people things in your own words!

it's one thing to read something memorise it and quote it, but another to understand it,

when you understand something when people ask questions you can answer them!

just a little tip and a pretty good one too.

I've been expanding my knowledge i don't want to just be a quoter of scientiffic data i want to understand it.

this is how i arrived at my new findings on the schizophrenia link.

I don't have a labrotory i am not a scientist, but i am someone with a brilliant mind, you people have them too, what with all the cannabis you use :punk:, anyway it's nice getting to know some of you people.

Thanks Indy Brilliant :peace:

You made me look up Papaya and seems the fruits, leaves and seeds have other really good medicinal properties aswell. Tons of the things up here.

Ahh goodone Ratty, I'm gunna look into futher 'n see if I can grow Papaya, when I get myself a bit of land later in the year. Hopefully track down a source of this Aussie Lemongrass (cymbopogon ambiguus), I'd imagine it'd be plentyful. It seems both extraction processes are quite simple.

So Bustedarse, you're implying that people that frequent here, are just reading the headlines and leave it at that. While you're some sort of genius that is going to save us from ourselves with your wisdom?

If there's one thing I hate around here it's the "you people" tag that seems to get applied. Don't "stoners" get enough labels already? If you're going to make a statement like that, don't generalize. We are all individuals here. capable of maintaining an informed opinion and views on the issues that affect us.

btw. If you actually look at the section this thread was posted in and news threads. you're actually required to supply the source for the information. This helps to limit the amount of misinformation given, especially by those who may think they may have all the answers. besides, having questions to ask on a topic makes it last a whole lot longer. Humans are naturally curious, so reading the information for ourselves, rather than have someone tell us all about it makes for a better understanding. It sure beats trying to figure out where one person's opinion is coming from, especially with no source to back it up.

I find your comments quite patronizing tbh budsted. oh and without a labratory I'm sure along with myself, some will find your " findings " very hard to believe.

Hi All,

About 10 years ago I had the misfortune of having a running motorbike chain snap and lock on around my left forearm.

The chain was super hot and inflicted a 3rd degree, full thickness burn about 90% of the full circumference of my arm.

For years the scarring was " bright red "due to a botched skin graft and stood out like dogs balls. People would often comment on my " ringbarked" arm.

PAPAYA TO THE RESCUE......

It was suggested that I apply papaya ointment to the scar to reduce its noticeability. I have done this now for about 5 years and can say that my scar has greatly reduced in colour and that there is even some hair starting to regrow.

If you have any scarring that needs tending, I would strongly recommend giving papaya a go. Worked wonders for me.
