OVER two thirds of police detainees in Footscray are riddled with a cocktail of drugs, with 48 per cent hooked on heroin.

An Australian Institute of Criminology report released at the end of February showed Footscray recorded the highest overall positive test rates for heroin (48 per cent), benzodiazepines (40 per cent), cannabis (41 per cent) and cocaine (six per cent).

Seven per cent of Footscray detainees tested positive for traces of other opiates such as codeine, methadone and buprenorphine, but recorded the lowest percentage of detainees who self-reported drinking alcohol in the 24 hours prior to the interview (10 per cent).

Footscray also had the greatest increase of detainees reporting the use of inhalants of any site interviewed, doubling from six per cent in 2007 to 12 per cent in 2008. The report found 55 per cent of detainees from Footscray attributed their criminal offences to drug use.

Once again proof the laws on drugs are a complete waste of time and billions of dollars, both of which could be much better spent elsewhere in society...

Hmmm, interesting seems like heroin is the poison of choice of Footscray detainees which is sad it just highlights the increase in heroin use around the Footscray area and that more Heroin users are getting picked up by the jacks for crime while under the influence and or because of their substance use issues they are committing crime to support it.

K.Rudd what the fuck are you doing about it???..... nothing. The statistics will only continue to rise and rise till its out of control only then will they listen? they better perk up their ears and open their mouths now because its rising fast not just in Footscray but in every state.

Peace Out

If they reconized drug addiction as an illness instead of a crime and allowed prescription heroin, then they would have no reason to arrest the majority of these people.

They carry on with there little statisics about how much of there detainees had drugs in there system, but conveniently leave out the statistics for how much of these people were arrested solely for drug use or possession.

The report comes from the Australian Institute of Criminalogy, which by the sound of it is a government department.

This makes me think that this department is funded by the taxpayer while the information is funnelled through the current political parties that preside over the department.

Understanding this clues us into what our Government leaders want to buy the next round of votes to win the next election.

So IMHO, reading between the lines Government wants to link criminals with drug use.

The war on drugs is set to continue with extra funding dear taxpayer.

On the other hand.... lol

The only way that I can see to see the Government insanity stopping is for a total financial meltdown at the government level.

I hope like hell that Greece goes kaput to start a Western Nation Domino meltdown resulting in the D10 dozers flattening Canberra and leaving the Australian states with one million dollar budgets.

That might make them pull back with their damn political ideology.

i note that heroin use is popular choice by 48 % of those tested , and though its not mentioned, the ready availability of quality herion is actually imported from Afghanistan

where brave Australian soldiers are fighting the enemy who are directly funded by the sale of this very same heroin used by the addicts in this survey/ test , or whatever it is

the abuse of addictive benzodiazepines come in at 40 %,

do the pharmacutecal companies take any responsibility for this ? .. no they dont

quite the opposite in fact, they continue to finance junkets for doctors to attend conferences, golfing holidays(including complimentary golf balls labeled with names like ' Valium, Serepax,' etc) , opera tickets and heaven knows what else in the hope that those doctors continue to prescribe these drugs in ever increasing numbers and unwittingly addicting more ppl

what a flaming turnout !

Exactly malbuzz. All I see on TV nowadays are crims WITH victims. Little schoolgirls/boys being stabbed, car crashes, fights etc.

But a good chunk of the Police's spending is on drug offences where there are no victims.

If I am smoking pot in my own home, doing my own thing, I am not hurting anyone, I am not being a danger/menace to society, I am just sitting at home.

But everytime on TV there are people being stabbed, fights and rape. The police should deal with the crimes that actually have VICTIMS, before they come into my house and take my pot away. Because smoking pot is a VICTIMLESS crime.
