Fridge grow?

Ok, im hoping for seedlings at the moment from some seed i had found. im wondering what kind of a set up could work in an old fridge. not expecting anything amazing, just a solid small plant.

i have a few fluro battons, an ablite 1000w uneversal lamp holder and also a few cfl fittings.

i want to grow in soil, but is it possible in a space that size and still have a thriving plant?

drip irrigation and exhaust fans would be going in along with a carbon filter.

thoughts?

Never seen a fridge that would be suitable for a 1000watter, you would literally melt the plastic walls from radiant heat. I use a fridge for a seedling/veg area and have 8x24w cfl's running in this. Only one 125mm axial fan for drawing air out and passive intake, works...just. Had the fan shit once already and did not notice for around one hour, what twigged me to the situation was a hot plastic smell drifting through the house, and when I looked in the fridge the walls around the top half had bubbled badly from the heat off the cfl's. So my opinion is that 1000w would be to much, maybe you have a buddy with a smaller HID that will swap (maybe 250w to 400w at a stretch) you will still need some serious ventilation with one of the small ones. Sounds like you have plenty of flouros so that may be the easy way to go, at least to start. Never flowered with flouro but enough of them do a decent job of vegging.

I to grow in soil.

Good luck

She's a big old antique fridge, will have to get the internal measurements shortly. its only a 1000w holder, wheni got it it had a 120w 2700k cfl screwed in to it (large edison screw). But yeah, heat was a bit of a concearn for me. was thinking 1 or 2 8-10 inch fans mounted near the top of the fridge ehaustin into the rear cavity that currently houses the condensor for the fridge. but would be looking to make a large (at least 2ft by 2 ft) panel filter that would replace at least some of the rear cover sheet. would also be looking to have a good amount of induction ventilation coming from near the bottom or underneath the fridge.

like i said, i've got a few different lighting options, so i guess its a case of figuring which will work in the space provided.

pardon my ignorance? but is lighting essentially for the production of uv??? and if it is, is it uva or uvb that is the more important? or both?

I have to admit TRD2JZ is right.. ventilation would be a big problem, but likely bigger yet would be heat.

Unlike most people growing in a wardrobe or such, fridges are made to keep heat or cool in, their sealed off well so where in a wardrabe... sure you need ventilation but the wood itself absorbs and disperses some of the heat, in a fridge your grow would completely be at the mercy of what fans and such you had in there... it could very easily get overheated imo..

yeah, heat is a worry for sure. will deffinately have to do alot of work to get that air turning over. also contemplating a temp and fan failure cut out being put into the system so it will cut the lights if temp gets to high or if i have a fan failure.

the temp cut is easy, i can use a temp adjustable themostat switch from an old reptile setup i have. fans a bit more complicated, but do-able.

yeah that should work well then to cater for heat however, I still wouldnt bother with a 1000watt light tbh, I think because of size restrictions of a fridge, there prob wouldnt be much point going over a 400 watt light as it would likely give the same effect due to space restrictions.

Oh, and i have a seedling on the grow, its about5-6 days since first cracking.

its just been thru its first 18/6 light cycle and has greened up and begun opening out nicely since its transplanting.

fingers crossed it does alright and turns out female. not much seemes to be going on with the other few seeds. they were just some seed i got from a mate ages ago.

i'm using it more as a trial run as i try and perfect my grow space and ability.
