Cannabis and schizophrenia

I guess we all wonder is the link between marijuana and schizophrenia real? Well i decided to compare rates of cannabis usage between country's versus the rates of schizophrenia among these country's. Take a look at these 2 tables.

If cannabis really did cause schizophrenia wouldn't there be higher rates of schizophrenia among country's with highest usage rate?

the actual increase of skitzophrenia can be directly blamed on the inceasing level of amphetamine use.

crystal meth, cocaine, and even some 'pills' which arent MDMA are associated with with 'triggering' skitzophrenia more so than cannabis.

 

Example.... stick a dude on meth and a guy stoned off his ass in a room together... whos more paranoid?

 

obviously the ice smoker.

 

I've had alot of mates over time who've smoked pot, but the ones which did cocaine were the ones which wound up fucked up.

 

 

It's also genetically predisposed some nationalities just like breeds of dogs (pit bulls) can be pre-disposed to being skitzos.

keep in mind skitzophrenia is a genetic problem and someone who is 'healthy' will not 'become' a skitzophrenic sufferer.

If you look at the map you can see that in certian areas the levels are more so concentrated than the others.

 

Australia is one of the leading pot smoking countries in the world and has a lower rate than some areas of Europe which smoke less than us.

What increase in schizophrenia? There is none.

Well done icemajic; but yes it has been pointed out before. Schizophrenia has remained the same despite increases in cannabis use in western society over the last 40+ or so years. And you are right you would expect countries that have higher usage rates to have higher schizophrenia rates if there was a causal link.

there is no link between cannabis and skitzophrenia, 'quote' from the union movie 'early teens who heavily abuse it can show symptoms of skitzophrenia' but in most instances it would be toxic psychosis which is a temporary form of mental illness, this can be brought about from 'heavy' abuse from alcohol or any drug. By heavy I mean people who smoke ridiculous quantaties.

sorry to double post, when i posted the last time it said the was an error so i assumed it didnt work. Sorry can admin please delete the other thread.

 

Back on topic, ive been smoking pot for about 2 years now, mainly Friday nights, twice a week at most and it hasnt had any negative side affects on me what so ever, and Ive never done anything stupid under the influence unlike alcohol.

 

I can see where people get the wrong idea tho, i have a mate who smokes far too much weed, he goes through about half ounce a week and he has a criminal record for vandalizing stuff. He also suffers from depression. Now a lot of people say look at what weed has done to your friend. But i in fact know better, all his criminal activity has been while he is under the influence of alcohol not weed, His depression has been there before he took up weed due to the fact his father is an alcoholic and he was harassed at school. As for him doing half an ounce, well he was sneaking cigarettes into school in primary school, also he has trouble moderating his alcohol usage, also he has trouble moderating his gambling on the pokies.

 

Many people or the media would look at a case like him and simply put his problems down to marijuana usage and not look at all the other problems like his alcohol consumption, his addictive personality and his poor upbringing.

Alot of people overlook alcohol unfortunately its promoted as a 'health tonic' to some degree.

 

you dont see the other face of alcohol 'reality' pub fights, sad stories, family abuse ect.

 

jump on youtube, you will find fuck all under 'marijuana violence'

 

do the same with alcohol and you will see shitloads.

 

 

Closest thing I got was the Afghan army, they smoke shitloads of hashish, then go fight the taliban, then smoke more hashish.
