THE Government will improve its tracking of street-level drug trends and better catalogue the number of drug-related deaths under a $4 million grant.

The National Coroners Information System will get $201,000 to maintain a world's best practice data base for coronial information on deaths due to drug use.

Turning Point, a Victorian drug and alcohol service, will get $750,000 to develop national web-based counselling for illicit drug users who may fear seeking face-to-face support or who are living in geographically isolated areas.

sAnnouncing the grants yesterday Health Minister Nicola Roxon said if left unchecked illicit drug use could wreak havoc on young people, destroying lives, tearing families apart and wrecking futures.

Illicit drug abuse is estimated to cost the community $8.2 billion a year.

And ecstasy use is on the rise with more than one in ten people aged 20 to 29 and one in 20 teenagers reporting they have recently used the drug that can cause dehydration, exhaustion and multiple organ failure, she said.

Ahem ...

More wasted dollars that could be put to much better use in actually helping people with problems ... more bullshit from people who don't seem to understand the logical arguments surrounding "drugs" ... People are going to take drugs as they have done for 1000's of years , It's not going to change. Use services and finances available to support the ones who may develop problems with drug use. It's all a farce and they are still trying to find more ways to demonize it , government funded and therefore biased research will not acheive anything at all remotely positive or constructive.

Nicola Roxon says:

Nicola Roxon said if left unchecked illicit drug use could wreak havoc on young people, destroying lives, tearing families apart and wrecking futures.

It's not like the issue is not "unchecked" , It's not like there isn't already shitloads of data on the subject relateing to what they are funding trying to find more angles and fearifying statistics.

"What tears us apart even more than drugs , are the theives and the god damn liars" - Jello Biafra

In this case , the theives and liars are exactly the ones who are meant to be serving in our interests and looking out for us as citizens of a country. The Police and the Political swing do MORE harm to drug users and society than anything else. It's the treatment of "drug" users by the power abusers that is what tears it all apart.

$4 million dollars ... wtf!? ... can you imagine the all the great things they could acheive with that kind of funding? ... This is crazy and should concern all taxpaxers as well , along-side Cannabis and other drug consuming peoples.

I mean I could go on all day about this crap they are pulling but I think it's pretty clear from the article how primative this seems , this reads like it could have been written anytime in the last 30 years excepting the names and number$ ... oooh , they want to tackle the illicit drug problem? ... :( ... I mean give us a break. Did everyone suddenly get stupid while we weren't paying attention? ... I mean even your layman knows that all this drug use stuff is (SHould) be so redundant now , noone really gives a shit ... in the end people just want to be left to their own devices and if there is no harm caused then there simply is no issue , It's a strange and fantastic world and people get up to all sorts of things , many great ... and some not so great , Peoples minds and actions can never be truly policed , Protect and Serve sounds reasonable , but obviously these uppity representative oppressors cannot even understand the meaning of their own hypocritical slogans.

So much wasted time , effort and money ... persecuting people ... and for what??? Sometimes it's so puzzling that even the theory of being controlled by an alien reptillian race starts to make sense.

At the end of an age we can see the potential for manipulating our very evolution as a race in many groovy ways and we are still fussing around with these tired ill-proven laws? ... sheesh ;)

Oops sorry , got on a roll there ... :peace:

All the best for 2010? ;)

Budman ;)

Wow, is that right?

So how much will that be reduced to if they take drug supply out of the hands of organised crime and put in the hands of the other organised criminals called 'the state' so that quality and dosage rates can be controlled and addicts don't have to rob my house to pay their dealers?

ffs
