Norm Stamper in Sydney

Recommended Posts

I heard this on ABC Radio National a couple of months back so I had a bit of a search and I haven't seen anyone post this, sorry if it's been posted before. It's a speech given by Norm Stamper at the Festival of Dangerous Ideas in Sydney.

He's the former Seattle police chief making sense on the so called war on drugs. I listen to radio national at work all the time and I'm glad that there are people (people who can't be swept under the carpet of "oh, he's just another pothead") out there talking about this.

I know there are some low opinions on cops who after their retirement jump on drug law reform, but put yourself in their shoes. Politically they can't do much while in office, but the best they can under cemented legislation and their hands are tied in many ways. Where after their retirement, they can have a lot more freedom about getting their opinion, one based on many years of experience, out into the arena. These are opinions many of us have held and supported for a long time, but it's good that we also have "respected" members of society on the case of Drug Law Reform speaking out and helping change perceptions. For the governments of the world, the war on drugs is just a black hole on every level, including financially, criminally and socially.

I for one really enjoyed this talk.

There's a few more threads with Norm Stamper, if you search his name for them.

Norm used to regularly bust people like you and me until one day he took his head out of his arse and realised he was part of a ridiculous campaign of hatred against his fellow man. About time too, and glad he is doing something about it to change things. Pity a few million more pigs wouldn't do the same and make everyone's life easier. They may even get some respect back in return. Don't hold your breathe though.
