HPS off MH Ballast?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm new to HID lighting and was wondering if there is a 400 watt HPS globe that will run off a 400 watt MH ballast, or, do I need to purchase a separate ballast? Any info would be greatly appreciated, I'm about 2 weeks from switching over to the flowering cycle and was told that HPS has a much better spectrum for flowering?

Many HPS balasts can run MH bulbs.

Wattage is important.

You can run 400W HPS on 600W balast.

But you cant run 600W HPS on 400W balast.

whilst it can be done

its not reommended

a 400w is rated to control 400w not 600w and vice versa

putting a 400w globe in a 600w ballast is asking for danger

u can purchase bulbs that run on hps gear and put out the blue spectrum

they are called conversion bulbs

once agiain i just wanan say how silly putting a 400w bulb in a 600w ballast would be..

all the best

I understand your fear but nothing bad wont gonna happend.

If you try you will see, but I support your advice to not experiment if you are not good with electric.

simple like that

Like you see its "should not", not "can not" or "impossible".

Just cause user must replace bulb faster than usual it's not recommended.

If your bulb die but you do not have another bulb of 600W to replace its ok to use 400W bulb on 600W ballast for couple days, week or two weeks.

Be sure to disconnect the power source before changing lamps. Always use the specified wattage of lamp. (A 400W lamp should not be used in 600W ballast). Lumatek recommends lamp replacement every 6-12 months.
