Nutrients for an outdoor potted in veg state

Recommended Posts

Iv done a few searches and looked through some previous threads but basically im looking for some nutrients to give my outdoor plants. They are in pots and still vegging, im going to my local hydro shop to have a shop around. Iv seen several brands and recomendations on this site such as dutchmaster, canna, cyco, hulk.

basically I have no idea about nutrients and am looking for a little advice. What should I be looking for in my nutrients? I know you want fast release and well thats bout it really. Any advice would be much apreciated.

note: i was thinking of just goin down and asking the guy but then i realised when i told him wat i was growing that wouldnt go down to well.

Umm, first off, what medium are you using?? that will have the most influence on your options.

tell him you're growing tomatoes, roses and strawberries. He'll probably suspect you're growin pot but have no basis to do anything about it. If he is a stoner he'll probably recognise it and steer you right anyway. (possibly with a nudge, nudge, wink, wink)

Most of those brands appear to be, as you would expect in a hydro shop, hydro nutes and people do use such for soil based grows. However, have you thought about worm poo/piss? Chook shit?(dynamic lifter), Fish/seaweed emulsions?(eg. Seasol) Composted cow manure? General soluble fertilisers?(eg. Aquasol)

I _think_ that the general products are better suited for soil based grows, particularly during veg. To then take some hydro style 'canna bloom booster' would seem a reasonable idea, and I've seen good results from doing so.

EDIT: So THC reminds me that pots outdoor doesn't necessarily involve soil. Could be a bad assumption on my part.

Don't use hydro nutes for soil.

Just to elaborate on that statement a bit...

Your average hydro nute or additive is not suitable for soil applications (there are exceptions, but best left till you have some experience), they are designed for inert media with little or no biological activity (basically sterile to start with).

However soil (well good soil anyway) has a whole host of beneficial bacteria, enzymes and microbes that aid in all sorts of plant functions, from nutrient conversion and uptake to pest and pathogen control, many of these are killed off or inhibited by the sterile salt nature of most nutrients.

The other issue is the nutrient buffering capacity of soil, it will hold certain nutrients while releasing others. Salt build up is also a problem with soils due to there slow draining and high water/nutrient holding capacity.

Check out Chrons super sauce here , it's the goods for outdoor soil applications.

If you cant be bothered with that then any balanced organic fertilizer will do (look for something with a decent amount of Nitrogen to start with, once bloom starts you will want more Phosphorous and Potassium in the mix).

Hope that helps.
