Hydroponics costs

I'm considering setting up a small hydroponics operation, say 3-5 plants, in my parents house. There is a perfect area, the right size, in a disused and hard to get to basement where i'm 100% sure my parents never go and will not notice anything. The only problem is; i'm wondering how much having a small hydroponics setup will cost on our electricity bill, for it its too much of a spike my parents are sure to know.

 

Can anybody tell me roughly how much a small hydroponics setup will cost? much appreciated.

lights+fan I'm pulling a bit under 700W, pissant amount 24*7 (fan), 1/3rd 20*7, most 12*7. Spreadsheet tells me it costs about AU$230/qtr.

 

If you're figuring HID costs figure in losses through the ballast, maybe 20%. a 1000W HID _probably_ consumes more like 1200W.

heya Green Dragon if your parents are blind, deaf and dumb then go ahead and do this ... if not wait till you are out on a place of your own, seriously im sorry to say they will wake-up to your comings and goings and the power use ..

Yep i agree with Frazz, u should never grow in ya parents on the sly as when u get caught out it will make it real bad.

 

Try and drop lil hints about growing weed and see what there reaction is and then u will have a idea in they would let u or not...

If you are going to use HID lighting then I doubt you will get away unnoticed by your folks - a 600w will push the bill up by about $200 - $250 a quarter.

 

Maybe you should wait until you have your own place...

why not sit down with you dad and have a chat... im guessing he isnt a smoker think of the pros and cons of where you get your herb, off friends + money doesnt go hand in hand same can be said for family in some cases, worst case you get from the street and associated debt because is so F%*&in pricey vs at home as legal as posiable.

 

This year start with an outdoor grow its the perfect time right now to plant a clone or seed, if your folks are like mine had me/kids in the 70s and many parents of that generation may enjoy the growing with you ie watering when you are away. start with one plant or maby two so clones would be your best bet.

 

Next year move out or pay the whole power bill and start your hobby indoors, even get into growing other plants. If there is a genuine intrest there they will support well i would...
