Young women risk it all - just for fun

GENEVIEVE Hedditch and Jo Neal are typical of a growing number of young women taking more health risks.

 

Both 21, and holidaying in Adelaide from Melbourne, they drink regularly and excessively to "get drunk".

 

Drinking alcohol about three to four times a week is common for Ms Hedditch, with each drinking session usually involving at least six drinks of her favourite whisky and soda or Carlton Draught.

 

Ms Neal also regularly drinks alcohol, enjoying beer and white wine on about three occasions each week.

 

They are typical of a new study which has found binge drinking, illicit drug-taking, no exercise and unsafe sex are among the risks young women are more frequently willing to take.

 

Girls are also starting these practices earlier in life and experimenting with more drugs than their young male counterparts, according to the new study published today in The Medical Journal of Australia.

 

The study says excessive alcohol use is associated with a range of other health-risk behaviours, including unsafe sex, unwanted pregnancy, drink-driving and road accidents, violence, and criminal activity.

 

"Seventy per cent of young women engage in binge drinking (five or more drinks on one occasion) at some time, with 19 per cent doing so on a weekly basis," it says.

 

"Young people are also drinking much earlier than before."

 

Melbourne adolescent psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg based his findings on a review of current trends for girls and young women aged from 10 to 24 years.

 

"We will be looking at one of the most unhealthy and vulnerable generations if we do not do something about it," he said.

 

He found young people were using illicit drugs at a rapid rate, with females at twice the rate of males. The rate is increasing for all types of drugs ? marijuana, painkillers, sleeping pills, steroids, heroin, amphetamines, cocaine, LSD and ecstasy.

 

One fifth of women aged 18 to 23 years now smoke regularly along with 30 per cent of 17-year-old girls, with the rate of young women using marijuana also on the rise.

 

Dr Carr-Gregg said while risk-taking was a normal way for adolescents to "discover his or her identity", the extent of the risk-taking was a worry.

 

"It is the extent to which an adolescent engages in health-risk behaviours, and the overall impact of these behaviours on personal health and development, that are of increasing public health concern," he said.

 

Other findings of the study included:

 

FORTY FOUR per cent of males and 46 per cent of females in Year 12 reported having sex without a condom.

 

HALF of the young women surveyed reported levels of physical activity below recommended levels.

 

MENTAL health problems topped the list of health concerns for young women, with girls twice as depressed as boys.

its interesting to see how far equality has really come in this new century......if indeed women are the smarter sex then why have they not seen the devastation that binge drinking has done for men....and the social ramifications?

research has proved that up to 4 drinks a night even for 7 nights a week has a positive effect by 'flushing' your liver and other organs, also the alchohol helps to break down some chemicals in your body. although, as we all know all too well.... too much is still too much

I'll swap ya mate, I kinda wonder the opposite, where can I find a fucking nice girl. My missus has a little sister and all her and her friends do is suck dick all day. Any dick, anytime, kinda fun to know and its good when there dad is out and we have to "supervise" them. But fucking crazy.

At the moment they are sucking a million dicks, but in 10 years they will be whinging when there boyfriends ask em for it.

But these same girls, they dont really smoke pot, they cough and splutter and pretend they are smokers. But they sure drink and fuck. But hey, so did the gyrls 10 years ago when I was that age.
