Funding hurdle for tougher drug laws.

By Amanda Banks

Gaping holes have emerged in the State Government's promise to introduce tougher cannabis laws after revelations no money has been set aside for the thousands of compulsory education courses that will be needed under the legislation, according to the Opposition.

Despite the legislation being identified as a priority, Health Minister Graham Jacobs' Office said that funding for the legislation would be considered as part of the normal Budget process.

Shadow mental health minister Roger Cook said the failure to set aside funding for the laws demonstrated a lack of serious commitment to the move.

"The Government is all talk and no action in relation to drug laws," Mr Cook said. "This legislation has huge budgetary implications".

The cannabis legislation, which honours a key election commitment to scrap Labor's 2003 laws, is long overdue after the Government broke a promise to have tougher regime in place by the end of last year.

The legislation will axe a two plant cultivation limit and reduce the prosecution threshold for possession from 30g to 10g. It will also scrap the infringement notice system and force first offenders caught with amounts under 10g to complete compulsory intervention sessions.

The laws were high on the Government's list of legislation in the Lower House on Wednesday, but will need to pass through a heavy agenda in the Legislative Council before Parliament breaks for summer in two weeks.

Hopefully they still dont go through, but an interesting point brought up by Mongy is that the repeal was just to take attention away from the law that went through allowing police to search without suspicion, which is a disgusting violation of civil rights.

Dear Mr bufo

Thank you for your email regarding proposed legislative amendments to allow police to stop and search people in specifically declared public areas cannabis issues.

We have noted your comments and appreciate you informing the Premier of your views.

A copy of your email has been forwarded to the Hon Rob Johnson, Minister for Police, for consideration of the points you have raised.

Regards

I doubt the cannabis repeal will go through, with all the pro-cannabis international news and no money in the WA budget to spare. Now is the time we need to band together and make our voices heard. When I find time I'm gonna write up a thread with contact details for all our political officials so people can start writting!
