Sunlight, what type and how much?

Hey all,

 

I've been experimenting with growing positions outdoors and ATM I'm moving the bigger plants into a more full sun position. They are getting the morning sun from about 5.30 am till about 2.30 pm when the shadows from buildings come over. Is this enough or should I move them to where they get even more?

I was also wondering if having the sun heat up the actual pots all is a bad thing too? Or should I shield them with something?

Direct sun on the pots is best avoided as much as possible, the more stable the root temps the better off you will be (prevents excess evaporation on those stinking hot days too).

Light intensity is not the primary cause of burn under HID lighting, it has more to do with the high levels of mid and high frequency IR radiation they emit.

Plants in high light situations will simply hit a point where they cant metabolize any faster and therefor will not use any more light, the extra simply goes to waste (this fade off point can be raised with the use of CO2, hence its current popularity for indoors growers).
