Any idea what this is ?

Recommended Posts

G'day there,

I've been doing lots of reading around here for a while and have learnt a lot, thanks, but this is my first post.

I've had a few half hearted goes at growing over the years and never been very successful. This year I went through an old collection of unknown seeds and sorted out a few that I thought looked the most likely to succeed. I tried germinating them in various ways and had no luck. I didn't really expect much as they were a few yeas old and had just lived in a plastic bag in a drawer.

I chucked the ones that looked no good out into an old unused pot plant outside. Did absolutely nothing, no watering at all. It got 1 good lot of rain just after I put the seeds there, and I got a plant growing.

I'd like to know what it is. I'm fairly sure its not a thistle.

I'd also like to have any advice on how to look after it.

The pot its in had a plant in it for about 10 years, no idea what type of plant, but it had large flat leaves, and grew about 1m tall. I've never really looked after that plant, so the soil in the pot could be completely sucked dry of nutrients. Any ideas on what I should be looking for to indicate a lack of any particular plant food ? What would you blokes recommend for someone who really hasn't a green thumb at all.

Its probably going to have to live in this pot, as I'm sure i'd kill it if I tried to move it.

The pics are from today, and its about 3 weeks old.

Thanks,

Col

Hi Col66,

I concurr it's MJ :yinyang:

Be careful atm as Nitty see's some starting of burn in pic on the leaf extending out away from ya fingertips.

I could be wrong though - mix looks good - if it is some type of compost, it has sufficient nutes in it to last a while so minimal, if at all use of nutrients at this stage.

Grow well col.

:yinyang:

Nitty.

Thanks people for the kind thoughts,

Nitty, you're right about the leaf. There is a touch of this "burn" on the tips of both of the first leaves to come out, erupt, sprout ?

Also thanks, as a posting noob, that was exactly what I was after, :yinyang:

I'll keep an eye on it, but have no real idea what to do if it gets worse. More reading will probably help me there ....

Yesterday it got 40mm of rain on it, and today i moved it around so it got sun since 6am till dark.

I need to find it a nice place to just sit and soak up the rays :yinyang:. ... what a life...

here's a soil recipe i picked up, very simple, very cheap and effective, take a look at these ones i have started, i'm a first timer too so dont worry.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v338/timbo3185/grow/PB130020_2.jpg

these 3 I started at the same time, they're about 3+ weeks, not exactly sure but anyway, The pot on the left has my soil mix, the two on the right had regular soil from the back yard however at the time of the photo i changed them to the new soil mix

if you dont have good soil, for example I live about 3-4k from the beach so my soil is quite sandy, however my bro is a landscape gardener so he got the backyard full of good quality soil about 30cm deep...

Grab a pot, lets say a 4.5L pot and use these ratios

1 pot of garden soil (try not to get very heavy soil) if you can get a light crumbly soil that's good otherwise any potting mix will do

1/4 to 1/2 pot of Vermiculite

1/4 to 1/2 pot of Perlite

1/4 to 1/2 pot of fertiliser (just get yates Dynamic lifter - organic slow release fertiliser, I got a 25kg bag for about) linky: http://www.yates.com.au/products/organic-g...nic-plant-food/

A sprinkle of Lime, lets say a couple of tablespoons worth

but you can really just guess the mix, doesn't have to be perfect

All of this stuff you can get at bunnings, too easy!! and with what you buy you could fill 5-10 or more 4.5L pots

Mix it up well, fill the pots, water the pots untill you see water run out the drainage holes and put your plant in.

I bought a little Yates plastic greenhouse from bunnings and a pack of jiffy pellets and started my beans in there, then transplanted them to pots,

enjoy :D
