More female plants!

Hey guys

 

Does anybody have any good techniques they would like to share about the premium conditions for getting plants to turn female? In the Grow Bible(i really should stop quoting the Grow Bible), it says that if you keep your soil at the right PH and feed them properly, that you increase your chances of getting your seedlings to turn female. Is this true?

 

Or is the sex of the seed, predetermined? In other words, do the seeds actually have a sex at the point they are created on the plant?

nah thats not conclusively poven that PH theory ... there seems to be no way to influence sex determination either way ..

Thanks for the reply. So pretty much what you get is what youve got? Basically you are pretty unlucky if you get 2-3/10 female seeds correct?

yep , in the wild average is supposedly 50/50 , but yea i just think positive, like 8/10 females , doesnt always work but ...

IMHO there are _very_ few ways to 'turn' anything, female to male or vice versa. I'm currently looking for info on 'reverse sexing' plants, which I only recently read about (though the internet is nothing new to me it took me quite a while to add internet+canna together), as in giving a girl boy(ish) bits. The progeny of a female and a reverse sexed female should be guaranteed female because there is no Y chromosome. (and such was the claim I read)

 

It _SEEMS_ to me that much (mis)information about sex is more about 'expression of sex'. ie. A well treated plant that would otherwise express maleness does not do so. The cultivator affirms he has a female. In testing in other than ideal circumstances the plant expresses male attributes. ipso duddleedum 'Shake your plants to promote femaleness'.

 

But then... I'm full of all sorts of it anyway. :-)
