UPDATE 7.58am: POLICE have confirmed the scene of a massive explosion in Hawthorn still has not been deemed structurally sound.

The Arson and Explosive squads plan on investigating the blaze today, butt will need to be given a safety clearance as the building was so badly damaged int he blast it is no longer sound.

"It has to be deemed safe before they can go in," a police spokeswoman said this morning.

Two people suffered serious burns and two others were taken to hospital with minor injuries from the explosion.

Two of the four people injured in the explosion, believed to be linked to a hydroponic set-up, were lucky to be alive, paramedics said.

Ambulance Victoria health commander Justin Dunlop said a man and a woman, both aged 30, suffered burns to 40 per cent of their bodies.

The Herald Sun can reveal the hydroponic set-up was found after the explosion in the ground floor flat of a block of units in Rathmines Rd, Hawthorn East shortly after 5.15pm last night.

The remaining residents in the block of flats have been relocated to other accommodation until they building is deemed safe.

Nice piece of propaganda here that wont get retracted or explained properly to the public who swallow this shite whole.

What is explosive about a hydro set up?

If it was the hydro set up that exploded, why did they find it after the explosion?

The type of fert used to make a type of explosive isn't used for hydro. Not many people keep diesel in their grow rooms either.

If it was a fire that blew a gas line, then still not explosive hydro.

Something else blew then the hydro was later discovered perhaps??

Sly reporting from police and media ^_^

My mother asked me about this hahaha.

The only thing I could think of was that the setup caught fire somehow, and they were using co2 or something.

EDIT: doesn't perlite 'expand rapidly' when heated to high (not sure how high) temperatures? Not sure whether this would be enough to cause an explosion though

not quite right AFAIK. Perlite is an 'already heat expanded' product.

How is Perlite made?

Perlite is a hydrated volcanic ore from the Pennsylvanian era of geology, with the approximate chemical composition of glass. Expansion is due to between 2-6% bound water. When heated to 1400+ degrees, the water vaporizes forcing the rock to expand. Perlite in its crude form weighs 70 pounds per cubic foot, after expansion the weight is reduced to 2-10 pounds per cubic foot depending upon the application.
