2.5 weeks through grow.. questions

Recommended Posts

g'day all

Newbie here.. tried growing a few times to never be completed.. really want to get it done this season.

I managed to get 10 apparent white russian seeds from a friend of a friend at the beginning of this month. I started germinating them on the 2nd of september, and 7 out of 10 were germinated by the 4th. All 10 of these (including the ones that were not fully germinated yet) were planted in pots in a greenhouse in the bush on the 4th. I then came back to check a week later finding that about 6 had only just popped out of the soil and the others were close. The greenhouse was left all the way down and felt too hot so i opened it up a little bit for some air flow. A week later I came back again to find that they had only grown a tiny amount and that it was still pretty hot in the greenhouse so opened it up even more. 7 of the plants were out of the soil, with two looking nearly dead and burnt, the others looking okay but still quite small. They were probably a little bit less than an inch tall with only the one set of begininng leaves. Watered them again (this was lest wednesday the 16th), brought the two nearly dead looking ones back with me. One has recovered a bit more and the other is dead. Went back to the spot today. They had grown a bit more with a couple extra nodes it seemed like close togethor, but they are only about an inch or so tall.

I had decided that it was not feasible having the babies in the bush and brought them all back home to put on my balcony(so 6 seedlings and going to be getting some more going soon hopefully). I think that they had such a slow growth rate because they were not being watered enough (once a week) and also the first two weeks was too hot and too much direct sunlight for the babies in the greenhouse.

I got some pictures to see what you guys think.. (not very good quality) i believe that now they will have much more care they will begin to grow faster and be able to put in a the bush when stronger. The downside of these plants is that they are really small for nearly 3 weeks, but besides that i think they look quite healthy besides a few burns, and have not stretched really at all. But could this slow start and stuff be bad for the plant and give it long term damage or something?.. also im going to buy some nutrients to give them just heaps lightly for a little boost.. anyone got some suggestions?

Also, when i went to the spot last week i had a bag of potting mix aobut 50 metres away from where i had the holes dug for the plants. I discovered that this bag of potting mix had been chomped through and made a nice environment for literally hundreds of termites. So i guess that is that spot destroyed.. I don't think it is real worth it trying to grow there if its filled with termites.. especially after reading the termite thread. This is dissapointing because this spot was really good getting lots of sunlight.. close to a water source, out of the way.

Sorry about such a large thread haha

cheers

heya Hotbox nice to meet you an ya plants  ... no real harm done to them , good you now have them under daily attention, seedling stage is slow and last about 4 wks, .. they crave at least 12-14hrs direct strong sunlight per day minimum, more hrs the better ...

the potting soil should have enuf nutrients still, seaweed extract solution can boost growth although its not exactly a nutrient it does condition the soil and stimulate growth in recommended doses its not harmful .. better than loading the soil with chemical nutes ..

also Dynamic lifter pellets which are slow release and derived from animal manures can accelerate growth but maybe wait another week or two before trying to 'push' growth with any nutrients ... these are just suggestions

where are they going when they start to kick on ? .. keep us updated :scratchin:

Thanks for the kind words Frazz :scratchin:

In the spot where they were they were receiving around 8-10 hours of direct sunlight, I am afraid that at home it might only be around 5 or 6 hours of direct light in the arvo as my house is pretty restricted with the light.. facing in all the wrong directions. The days are moving past 12 hours of sun light which is good i suppose.

The potting soil I used was a seed raising mixture from Amgrow, which has no nutrients in it. The seaweed extract sounds like a good idea to me, im all for the more organic solutions.

Mate had a pretty good spot but as i said before the bastard termites seem to infest the area and i dont think it would be a good idea to put some plants up around there.. So i think i might have to look for another spot rather than risk it . The way they ate through that plastic is scary haha. Does anyone know the kind of radius they would stay within from where you find them?

Im planning on filling some holes with potting mix and some slow release fertilizers like you said.

Have you started any outdoors this season frazz? hopefully going to try get my hands on some more seeds and get some more crankin before it's too late.

hey man what i would/do do is too get the seedlings going under a fluoro. give em a couple of weeks until they get a few of their propper leaves then look at moving them, the only thing is if you got em on like 18/6 veg under fluoros you will wanna gradually take it down too get them too roughly the same amount of light as outside.

i hope that you find em a good new spot, lots of light and god damn make sure water is close :bongon: nothing worse than lugging buckets for KMs which are nearly empty wen u get there :peace:
