Recommended Posts

Hey

I had a 20 bucks bunnings voucher that was going to expire so i went and picked up some shit today

i picked up a mini green house witch is pretty good for 7 bucks post-17056-1253285572_thumb.jpg

some seed rasing mix soil post-17056-1253285439_thumb.jpg

and some seed raising mix premium grade coir block post-17056-1253285520_thumb.jpg post-17056-1253285842_thumb.jpg

I have some questions about this coir block stuff

Is it coco ?

How come i always see different stuff that looks the same called coir which i bought and also peat something i think its called coco peat and iv seen jiffy peat or something and i think there is coco coir but mine doesn't say its coco on it any were just coir block so what gives with that ?

Is peat and coir the same ?

Is the coir block i bought good for starting seeds ? and should i just buy the normal coir block after the seeds have started off and i am wanting to transplant ?

Is the amgrow black label seed raising mix soil that i bought good for starting seeds ?

Should i just buy the coco from my local hydro shop instead of this bunnings coir brick ?

I am wanting to try both soil and the coir to see with ones work best for me then work with that for a while to learn the ropes before i get into hydro cos as they say u have to crawl before u can walk, i am new to growing but iv herd good things about coco so hopefully i brought the right one as some of this sites grow diary's that are using coco are amazing

if use could answer my questions i would appreciate it as i like knowing witch is the best and doing it right the first time as i am wanting to get into this full time so i can end up smoking my results

thanks

Is it coco ?

Yes, however it contains slow release fertilizer which is not good as you want to be in control of nutrients, especially in the first few weeks.

No they are not, although both are derived from coco, peat is naturally biodegraded (half way to dirt) whereas coir is processed raw coco coir.

Coir is more stable and fairly inert which makes it good for hydroponics, coco peat acts more like soil, releasing some nutrients and buffering others, it also holds more water, less air and degrades faster than coir.

Not much good for seed raising that stuff, tends to have too much nutrient in it and I have found they come preloaded with damp rot spores as well. Stick with the seedraising mix then transplant into a quality coco coir.

should be ok, I use the yates one without to many troubles

worth paying for a RHCP certified one to, most of the brands hydro shops sell are so shouldnt be a problem. (just beware cheap nursery bought coco can have some pretty high salt levels, worth payin for the good stuff)
