Building your own carbon filter

Recommended Posts

I haven't started to build yet as I have a cash flow prob at the moment, so I am looking into cheaper alternatives to the parts needed for my wanted grow-drobe. I have pooTubed a bit and found some interesting videos on how to make your own carbon filter.. my questions are: (other than has anyone made their own filter before?)

Do you have to use activated carbon, or can you just make your own charcoal in a barrel in your backyard and use that?

and, if anyone has made one before, what did you use for the basic structure??

Do I have to make it like a proper filter, or can I make it like a gas mask filter??? (because if I can then I can make it out of stuff around the house - minus the carbon of course, still have to buy that!)

and: How big would it have to be?

I'll be using a wardrobe (not bought yet) that will be the standard measurements for a wardrobe I guess. I am aiming for something not much taller than me (155cm tall / short however you want to put it haha) and I'll prob only have enough room for two plants.. 4 with crowding... but I haven't decided yet because I don't know how cannabis does in a crowded environment.. I know some plants like it, but I haven't experimented yet. Keep in mind that I wouldn't be looking at expanding later on down the track this is purely for personal use.. I don't really want to have to come up with the money yet either.. I just want to know if anyone has made a successful one from everyday objects and if not, what do you recommend (other than buying one)??

EDIT: have found a link through someone elses sig for a DIY carbon filter.. using mesh, pvc, wadding and shade cloth... looks awesome.

NEW QUESTION (if anyone is interested): Can I just use homemade charcoal? ..if I could not get any charcoal at all (activated or not), what can I use instead?
