Fucken BULLSHIT !

Cant these people think for themselves ? They dont HAVE to drink Piss ! Or smoke the herb .

If these people are so proud etc , as I have heard in past arguments , why dont they continue to live like their ancestors did ? IE , live off the land etc . Instead they live off the taxpayer IE Centerlink , they live in houses , they take the whitemans drugs . they wear the whitemans clothes .

can't let this one go past without saying something. not having a go at you mate but there are very good reasons why they can't live a traditional lifestyle any more.

basically it comes down to the fact that a lot of the animals that they used to eat are extinct.

in the central desert just to give an example, habitat destruction that came from land clearing means that there is not enough wild animals to hunt. who knows how many plants have gone as well.

if you talk to old people from the area they can name tens of species that you just can't find anymore.

sure there are animals to hunt in other areas of australia despite all the extinctions but the land has been divided up amongst the new settlers. speaking as someone who grew up around farmers, they don't take kindly to anyone hunting on 'their' farms without asking permission and they aren't friendly to aboriginal people at all.

when you look at something like fishing, which is a major source of food for anyone living on the coast, how can someone catch a fish to feed their family if a big trawler has come through and pulled out tons of fish already? sure you can still catch fish in areas of australia away from cities but if you're aboriginal from sydney what are you supposed to do?

then there's the fact that people came and pushed them at gunpoint off all the best agricultural land, so how can you gather any plant food after its been bulldozed and fenced off to plant wheat?

water is probably the most important thing if you are in the desert and what happens when people start digging big wells and pumping millions of litres to irrigate their cotton? your little traditional sink hole won't be deep enough to reach the water anymore.

there was a war in this country and it is still going on. that's why some aboriginal people are poor and don't have many options.

every australian who lives on this land and eats the things that farmers grow like wheat, rice, lambs, cattle, wears clothes made of cotton and lives in a house made with timber or brick is benefitting from the wealth of the land. that land was taken at gun point and many people died in the process and people still get killed if they try to rock the boat.

that's how it is with people and this isn't the only country where its happened.

its not your fault but it's important to have your eyes open to what goes on.

-------

to get back on topic, the thing that no one has mentioned yet is transport costs. how much would it cost if you wanted to drive a carload of weed up there? petrol is pretty expensive here in the city and i bet its loads more expensive in the middle of the desert.

people aren't stupid and they know that they could just drive into town to buy weed but if it takes a day or two to drive to town and another day or two to get home then maybe it becomes more understandable to just buy more expensive products.

you could definitely grow weed in the desert but you're going to need a fair amount of water which is hard to come by.

also police always inflate the prices of everything to do with drugs so why are we believing their prices in this case? could it be that those little bags were sticks? 20 bux for half a gram isn't unheard of and if an apple can cost 5 bux then weed would be pretty pricey too.

hehe, longest post EVAR!

Im sure they manage to grow something, but there would be a lot of other things stoping them from growing anything decent other than the constant 12 hour light. Firstly even though they can't survive off it (thanks to us), a lot of them still hunt and gather so it would probably be very hard to grow anything up there without everyone knowing about it.

Anyway let's put it into perspective, down in the middle of Melbourne you usually pay $20 a gram. Considering that, it really isn't that surprising that they pay up to $100 (I've heard it was closer to $50) in such an isolated place that has a wet season that makes it inaccessable by road.
