Which water pumps for dwc?

Recommended Posts

G'day, I got a dwc setup, 5 20ltr buckets... I got a submersible pump but I don't like it... it's a RIO 180. The reson I don't like it is because it's submersible and doesn't have two hose connectors, the other reason is because it doesn't pump quickly enough. What I was wondering was what are the best water pumps that aren't submersible and have two hose connectors? This pump will be used to pump nutes from a very large res into the buckets.. and when the buckets are to be drained, from the buckets to a drain in the bathroom..

Why even use a pump at all? I mean, just raise the res, attach a 19mm pipe and this will go to the control bucket, which has a float valve in it to regulate not only the level in the buckets, but the level in the control bucket too. And as to the drainage, I'd make a 13mm hole at the very base, fitted with a grommet and absolutely watertight, then attach a small 13mm tap to seal. This can then be opened when each bucket has to be drained, and because it's at the bottom, it will drain completely. Once that's done, you can seal the drain tap, use some bleach solution to clean and sterilize, rinse well several times and then return to the system. I don't understand the need for a pump to get water out of the buckets and into them.... lol

yup,,, sorry, I fail to see the connection here???? what does this have to do with water pumps??? have you ever done a dwc setup in a small area? do you have any idea about what you're talking about?? I'm sorry, I fail to see how that could help... not only does it sound messy and difficult to setup, it just doesn't make sense..sorry lol

?????? I still don't get why you need a submersible pump. Submersible pumps are for water, you don't put an air pump in the water....What are you talking about?

Yes, I am running a bubbler right now, and I don't need one. lol

Sounds like you're asking for a good submersible pump to drain and fill the buckets when you change the nutrients and top up the bucket.... What are you talking about?

I'll be a pinned out march fly glued to the bottom of your chin!!! hehe Is that your mutant grey matter Luke? Spread out all over that big stick your holding??? In your avatar that is lol no airpumps... I'm happy with those atm.. they're bubbling away happily... this doesn't have anything todo with air man.. it's about moving nutes around that are disolved in water... I wan't to quickly and efficiently move it between a huge res that I don't want to move, and 5 buckets that I don't want to even touch when moving nutes...

Oi putard , check out a boat shop, they sell these things called bilge pumps that are cheap as piss and you could use it to drain your bucket. You'll need to wire it up, just 2 wires no earth. I doubt you could run it constantly though.

Anyway I dont run no pumps that aint submersible, so I dunno what kind, but I use a 2500lph pump to pump to my bathroom. Depends how far your bathroom is I guess. Its not as easy at this house and I tended to just pump into buckets with an 800lph and take the buckets to the bathroom, it was to much hassle getting the garden hose out and then rolling it back up, etc.....

I have a tap on my raised resevoir that I turn off and fill the resevoir with the nutes and then let them flow through the control bucket and fill up again. Then you just run the hose straight off the tap, and pH correct it when its in the raised resevoir....

The time when the plants roots are hanging dry I would Imagine is quite good for the plant, bubblers would be a better system if some kind of Flood and Drain bubbler hybrid. bubblers are a bit drowning on the plant.

I thought so, so why would my idea of a float valve not be appropriate? I would have thought that would be easier than having to mechanically move water around, all you'll have to do it top up the main, large res once in a while and you shouldn't have to do much more. Leave a drain tap at the bottom and you can drain out the large res without any trouble....

Why wouldn't this work? lol

Simple... float valve is still mechanical... only it's me storing/spending all the joules, by doing extra exercise to raise the buckets. That just won't do when it comes to draining the setup. I will only connect another 20ltr bucket to the float valve. as in one or two weeks, it shouldn't need to be topped up by more than 20ltrs..

As for the 2500lph, it really spits it out, too big too buy for these purposes. If the run is gonna be fairly flat I'd go with any pump. If you go downwards to get there you are cheering, your 180 will probably do it. But yeah, get a bigger pump, I can barely see that little pump pushing water over the edge of the tub.

Go for something around 1000, I'd go for a submersible myself....

@luke skywalker, you'd need sum crazy headroom mate, to get the buckets high enough to have them drain to the bathroom. I thought of this when I first started using bubblers, planned it all out and then thought, fuck it, why not just fucking pump it out, you dont need to totally drain it, just as far as the pump'll go.

As well as that your totally off track on what we're talking about. :)
