Drug Sniffer Dogs @ Fremantle Train Station!

Recommended Posts

From the West Australian on Saturday, there was a follow up today but I'll have to type that manually I think as I can't find it on their dumb-ass site. ;)

Sniffer dogs check for drugs in clubs, pubs

11th July 2009, 9:00 WST

Police sniffer dogs used to search for drugs outside pubs and clubs in Northbridge and Fremantle train station last night found no illegal substances.

Police spent three hours in the cafe strip of Fremantle and at the train station, but said because there were so few people in the area it was not conducive for any major detection.

After midnight, the dogs moved to the Northbridge precinct where they weaved between revellers waiting in lines outside nightclubs.

Police said the dogs picked up on a small number of drugs but subsequent searches yielded no narcotics.

Last night’s search, which authorities plan to make a regular occurrence, is another stage in the police’s fight against drug-fuelled violence in entertainment precincts and has received the support of Police Minister Rob Johnson.

"Police believe sniffer dogs should also be used in pubs and clubs, I would have no objection to such a proposal,” Mr Johnson said.

A spokesman for Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan said police would consider how the passive dogs could be used inside venues before preparing a submission for Mr Johnson.

Under current laws, police would need a search warrant or the permission of the venue operator to bring sniffer dogs inside.

Australian Hotels Association WA chief executive Bradley Woods said he strongly supported the use of sniffer dogs and would welcome their presence inside venues.

“That would provide much needed support in tackling the problem of illicit drugs within venues and the problems with intoxication associated with that,” he said.

It was the first time on the streets for the dogs, which recently completed a 12-week training course to detect drugs such as cannabis, methamphetamine, heroin, ecstasy and cocaine. A person would be searched if a dog indicated they had drugs.

The labradors, bred by Customs in Victoria, are trained to sit next to anyone suspected of carrying or having been near drugs. Regular police drug-detection dogs are not used in public because they are taught to seek out illicit drugs actively rather than just sit down next to a person.

This shit makes me mad. They are effectively searching people at random at a train station without consent or reasonable cause. And all that effort for a few "hits" by the dogs, and then subsequent searches which showed nothing. DAMN YOU STUPID ASS LIBERAL/NATIONAL GOVERNMENT!

From the article:

If they were actually doing that then why not target the alcohol, as that's the real cause of street thuggery. Clearly the police exercise was all bullshit and simply another way to crack down on the people.

The ombudsman in NSW produced a report about 3yrs ago(give or take a yr or 2)that basically stated that the amount of $$$ involved in terms of training the dogs etc for results were not worth the investment of $$$. The main reason for police undertaking these op's is to reassure the public that the "war against drugs" is still being fought in the trenches. The ombudsman also raised concerns regarding the infringement of people rights as the are essentially being assaulted. Needless to say the NSW government failed to adopt any of their recommendations.

My mate got done this year at central station (NSW) with a sniffer dog. He was on his way to the big day out. Drinking doesn't really agree with him and this was evident on the day in question as he was also ejected from the big day out.....

Given his record at his next festival (Groovin the Moo) he was again detected by a dog (as was his brother). Unfortunately becasue of his conviction he was stripped searched (read NUDE) but smart enough not to be carrying. His brother was patted down. His disappoint came with his penis. Cause he had used before the festival his penis adopted 'shrivel mode'. He was busting to impress the cops. Not this time though.

Police have now been granted access to randomly let sniffer dogs off their leash and into a persons home.

If the sniffer dogs detect drugs the police can enter and detain the suspect using "any force necessary".

Last night, in the first trial of this new law, police shot and killed a man growing 1 Cannabis plant when he tried to pat the dog and give it some warm milk, thinking it was homeless.

Police say "he was a hardened criminal with a sophisticated hydroponic setup".

Seriously though, this is a massive invasion of rights. It IS equivalent to.... okay imagine how many people would be opposed to them making a machine which could see through people's clothes to see if they had drugs. A dog is exactly the same, except it smells through your clothes to detect drugs.

why dont you guys do my trick and make your self activated carbon stash bags that the dogs cant detect the drugs through.

i use double sattys 1 with activated carbon 1 with the buds the carbon absorbs all the smell just like when ya growing.

am i the only one who does this.

it seems to work i have had 1/4 buds in one when standing near a sniffer dog when they where searching my friends, problem is i dont know if the dog was trained to detect pot or not. put it this way i have never been busted with dope using this technique.

fuck the drug dogs they can eat shit

Our tax dollars at work.

What a waste. As MP said they should be dealing with the alcohol induced violence. Working in Northbridge I used to find a ton of little baggies all over the street on Monday mornings. Almost all with white residue inside from pills or whatever. I guess the only drug that would cause violence on a Friday/Saturday night would be speed but most of these people are popping bikkies. I don't really agree with that but they can do what they want with their bodies. The damn dogs shouldn't be going after someone with $50 worth of pills. That's just stupid. I guess the cops have gotta get their numbers up somehow to impress the bosses. :bongon:
