Smell & Noise proofing

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

so far using the info ive learned from this site ive made the following set up.

post-16036-1246454904_thumb.jpg

I was wanting to hear from some one thats set up a fan / filter and ducting through to the roof and into a whirlie bird in a similar sized tent or room.

Im stumped not sure wether to get axial or centrifugal fan, or a carbon filter or sok with some silencer?

im prepared to spend as much as it takes to get this part of the system right.

the tents got 2 built in 6" ducting vents in the top

I am about to set up a very similar grow. Same size tent n all. Only difference being medium really.

I already have some 150mm(6") ducting to fit the exhaust vent hole in the tent which is going to run to the roof cavity access panel. As a fan i am just getting a $50 in-line job.

Being winter i don't think air intake is necessary esp. due to temps.

I'm not really concerned about odour at this stage. But if it does become an issue then its a simple upgrade to: an odor sock or carbon filter which i believe also necessitates a centrifugal fan (not cheap) to force the air through the extra resistance added with the filter.

Noise i hadn't really considered. I think if it was an issue in the room my tent will be i would try to attach blankets or something like that to the walls to absorb the sound.

lol

Hey matey

If you are concerned about noise you must use a fan silencer of some kind AND some insulated ducting to absorb the noise that enters the duct. I have used a few systems with centrifugal fans which are noisy buggers and have found that getting a cardboard box and lining it with slabs or rockwool works great for silencing the fan but if you use normal ducting you are wasting your time coz the noise will go straight out thru your duct. With your inline fan the problem won't be quite as bad coz they are a bit quieter but i still recommend using the insulated ducting. if you do it properly your system will be virtually silent. From a couple of metres away you will hardly hear a thing

if you are using a tent you should consider putting the fan on the outside to save your limited space inside and improve sound insulation

Cheers

yeh i think im gonna get a good centrifugal fan, and a fan speed controller encase its overkill -then the insulated ducting. has any one got a picture of there take at sound insulating a centrifugal? wouldnt mind hearing from some one whos done it b4 spending all those $$.

Thanks for your help heli and viney

Hi raisecain

Before you head off convinced that a 'centrifugal fan' is what you need check out 'Mix flow' fans. They have got what you may need in terms ofnois air flow dynamics.

I have heaps of info on these fans (PDF), URL's......... ect if you want them to chaqse up more info PM me.

"Acoustic ducting" well worth it. A lot has to do with the 'design' side of things when it comes to fans and noise...........some on your part and the other is manufacturing side.

lol

Nitty.

I got a 200mm mixflo. 51db is bloody loud@2am in the morning. I havent looked at the insulated ducting yet but yesterday I got a big bloody box, lined the whole thing with styrofoam, went to saint vinnies and got a shit load of blankets to stuff in there. Cuts the sound back about 50% but I really think im guna have to go the insulated ducting. Anyone know wot the silencer entails?
