Melamine cabinet

Recommended Posts

A number of yearsago in my youth I was training to be a cabinet maker, lets just say that it didn't happen but I picked up some very good skills.

I have constructed a number on box's over time with some very good results. The most recent was a 1800l x 1200w x 2400h.

this was all fully concealed with tap and drain. even had a RCD and circut breakers.

Feedback was that it would produce a very healthly crop of about 2 - 2.5 pounds every eight weeks.

You can go to most large timber merchants and purchase cover sheets for a fraction of the cost. usally one side is perfect and the other has bits missing but hey we only need one side to be white melamine.

though you don't actually say so I will take that as a 'yes for melamine' comment.

Tks for the tip about 'offcuts' or 'spoiled sheets', it's probably more of use to others who don't know such happens but is a valid input to the discussion.

Still looking to find whether melamine reflectivity is good.

I believe there is 5mm melamine (possibly 3-ply+mel) but a cupboard would more commonly be (is it) 14mm thick stuff, 12mm particle board with a skin of melamine either side.

If I was to be using mylar I wouldn't bother getting the melamine, just some (wheather resistant, moisture) particle board or ply (I've seen marine ply recommended).

SS's results seem to speak well for the reflectivity of the simple melamine though. I was thinking of this because you can get relatively cheap prefab 'box' kits. I'm OK with hardware (came 1st in woodwork at school, 30yr ago) but a bit sloppy with a saw, and not so surprisingly such kits sometimes cost less than the raw materials (with offcuts). Also, the exposed edges are normally also melamine stripped, a fiddly job though not difficult, ironing on edge strips.

ive done that years ago.. youre talking laminated chipboard.. or craftwood.. you iron it on to melt the glue.. its a bit different to what ive used...

that board ive used is just 5mm pressed paper.. craftwood.. thats got a painted white side.. used for the backs of kitchens.. and is a lot cheaper than laminated board.. of course lamented chipboard will be a lot stronger.. and definitely a good choice if you can afford it..

Used the white melamine and its great stuff for grow rooms/boxes, its easy to clean and water proof if u silcone the joins up and has great reflectivity (as good as flat white paint or panda)........The 19mm thick stuff is the way to go if your building a small box, as wont need to build a frame first.

Melamine doesnt need re-coating like paint and is much easier to clean, and better than panda as it doesnt need to be replaced every 6-9mths.

The choice is an easy one IMO.

Go the melamine :D
