Greens pick Rhiannon as Senate candidate

Recommended Posts

NSW Greens MP Lee Rhiannon is a step closer to a career in federal politics, with her party choosing her as the top candidate for its Senate ticket at the next election.

Ms Rhiannon told her party in February she would stand down from the NSW upper house in a bid for a Senate spot.

Her selection as candidate was confirmed on Sunday at the count of the member's votes in the NSW Greens preselection ballot.

"The Greens NSW senate team will take the challenges of the economy and the environment to the next federal election, mounting the biggest campaign the party has ever undertaken," Ms Rhiannon said in a statement.

"The composition of the next senate will be crucial to ensuring real action on climate change, creating green jobs and protecting human rights.

"We will be working hard to regain a Greens NSW senate seat."

Ms Rhiannon acknowledged it would be a huge task to get a senate seat, with polling suggesting the Greens have about a 50/50 chance of winning a Senate spot in NSW.

A senate quota in NSW is 14.3 per cent of the vote.

Along with the need for political donations reform, Ms Rhiannon has campaigned against politician's perks, including generous superannuation, and the V8 Supercar Race to be held at Olympic Park.

In 2002, she attempted to block the state government's sniffer dog laws and also proposed NSW trial "cannabis cafes" at three locations, only for it to be rejected by then premier Bob Carr.

Ahead of the 2007 NSW election, she was also forced to defend the Greens' drugs policy to decriminalise all personal drug use in the state.

Prior to entering parliament, Ms Rhiannon was a member of the NSW Women's Advisory Group to the NSW government and founded the National Coalition for Gun Control in 1988.

Wait so is she heading the national greens or just NSW?

Sorry, haven't slept yet :xcited:

I think she should go for the greens, not just nsw greens.

America elected a black president, I really have a feeling that if a party chooses a female, we are going to vote for her just to catch up with america on not being discriminatory.
