Raid nets $.5m in cannabis

It must be good growing country – the latest drug raid in the Sunshine Coast hinterland town of Kin Kin has allegedly netted close to $500,000 in cannabis.

 

Tactical crime officers and Pomona police raided a home on Golden Gully Road early yesterday morning.

 

They allegedly found about 40kg of cannabis – dried, bagged and ready for sale – in two 44-gallon drums on the property.

 

A sophisticated hydroponic set-up was also allegedly found on the grounds along with marijuana plants in a variety of growth stages, including mature and seedlings.

 

Cannabis has a street value of about $320 an ounce, and police believe the 40kg seizure is sure to have an impact on the Coast drug trade.

 

"This will impact on the availability of cannabis on the Coast," Superintendent Ben Hanbidge said.

 

Police said that in the past six months they had interrupted several cannabis-growing operations.

 

They had been in the Pomona and Kin Kin areas, and police had seized both equipment and plants.

 

The methamphetamines trade also was dented after police raided a lab in Ilkley last month and allegedly found a large-scale operation, despite attempts by an alleged offender to burn it down.

 

The latest haul will be tested by a laboratory before being destroyed.

 

The information that led to this and other raids came from a variety of sources, including the regular Mooloolaba drug dog operations and tips to Crime Stoppers.

 

A 39-year-old man will face Maroochydore Magistrates Court on July 14 in relation to yesterday's alleged drug haul. He has been charged with possessing dangerous drugs, producing dangerous drugs and possession of property used to produce dangerous drugs.
