IT WASN'T worth the 'boys' weekend' trip to the Nimbin Mardi Grass festival for a Brisbane hardware technician who came close to ruining his career prospects and trips overseas after he was busted with LSD pills and cannabis by police hound 'Brodie'.

Barrett Earle Burke, 28, in a letter to Lismore Local Court magistrate Jeff Linden, pleaded for some leniency because he was now, 'acutely aware of how my future may be adversely affected as a result of my serious lack of judgement and outright stupidity'.

“I do not want this lack of judgement on my behalf to shape or hinder my future in any way,” he said.

Burke said his sister was getting married overseas and a conviction would affect his ability to travel.

The technician was caught by officer Brodie during police operation Uranium IV on May 2, after his car was stopped for an RBT along the Nimbin Road at Goolmangar. The police hound sniffed out 10 LSD pills and 10 grams of cannabis, despite Burke saying he had no drugs.

Burke then admitted to the officers he paid $100 for the LSD pills and that they, along with the cannabis, had been for his personal use at the drug festival.

Burke, a father of two from the Brisbane suburb of Virginia, pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of a prohibited drug, but asked the court not to record a conviction.

“Why should I not convict you when you know it is against the law?” Mr Linden asked.

“I was just being stupid. I'd behaved myself for four years and went away for a boys' weekend; went mad and got into trouble,” Burke said. “I didn't know the trouble it would get me into.”

Mr Linden warned Burke that he needed to see people, like the magistrate frequently did, who suffer from drug-induced psychosis

Mr Linden said he would give Burke 'one chance'. Without recording a conviction, he placed Burke on a Section 10 Bond to be on good behaviour for 12 months.
