Hello.

I've been interested in pot ever since I started caring about my life.. which was about a year ago. I just keep getting drawn back to cannabis and it's healing properties (whether by coincidence or a higher power). I'm quite interested in it helping me fall asleep and possibly help with anxiety. These are two things that are holding me back from getting a job and living life.

Now when I say absolute newbie, I mean, I've never even seen a joint in person, let alone smoked one.

So :bongon:. I have read guides about growing and seen videos ect. But I think I need to ask questions to really understand.

First off, what are the laws in australia regarding cannabis? And what number of plants should I stick to?

Secondly... The smell. If I had say 2 plants growing in a cupboard, and the only ventilation was me opening the cupboard a few times a day, would my room REEALLY stink? Because that might be a problem..

And thirdly, lighting. I don't understand any of it. What types of lights are needed? All the lights I know of are the normal roundish lights, then there's fluorescent tube ones, and then there are the energy saver ones that replace the normal type, and LED. What type is needed and how many watts? I'm interested in LED lighting due to the less electricity required.

The most I have ever gardened is planting bird seed in soil i dug up and put in a pot. But for what its worth they turned out fine :yinyang:.

First off welcome! Interesting story with being drawn to the herb and how you think it may help you :yinyang:

To answer your growing Q's - well you didn't mention where you plan on getting seeds if you have never seen a joint before.... suggest using a seedbank, and my prior experience will let me recommend PS (planet skunk, as sometimes advertised on here).

Next, with lighting you really really want a small HPS at minimum - however that will definately create heat in a cupboard which NEEDS to be extracted - and if there is going to then be some decent buds (because of the good light!), you will need some sort of carbon filter or whatnot!. This all adds up and for a first time smoker (!), I feel is unnecessary.

So my recommendation to you is: get a couple....few.... of the biggest CFL's you can find. This will generate a lil heat, but not a whole lot. Next up you WILL need to install at least a decent 120mm computer fan as exaust, and say an 80mm intake into the cupboard. Or 2x 120mm exaust and passive intake, whatever you can wire up. I used to run flexible ducting left over from my car pod filter install to keep the fans mobile inside and not allow light in or out. This way not a whole lot of noise either. There WILL be a smell, but if you keep it to 1 plant and not grow her too big I think you could get away with it.

So if I was to go at 1 plant a time? what sort of supply would that yield? Would that really be enough to be able to clone another one afterwards to always have an ongoing stream?

And with the compact fluorescent lamps, what sorta wattage are you talking here and how many? does 6x 12w = the same as 7x 10w?

I was hoping I wouldn't have to worry about ventilation :yinyang:. That seems like a tricky part.

the laws vary from state to state , dunno just google'd this http://everything2.com/title/Marijuana%252...n%2520Australia

i reccomend you read some sticky's and some grow guides, they easy to read if u are actually interested and it will give you a idea,

my opinion u would want some sort of proper extraction and intake ventilation if you plan on flowering any plants,

Okay I've been thinking more about this.

Thing is, I would be growing this in my room. It's sorta important that my room does not smell really weird.

Could I possibly overcome this issue with some air fresheners? Possibly put one over the exhaust perhaps?

I do like the idea of using compact fluorescent lights due to the electricity consumption. I wouldn't want to use over 150w, atleast not on my first grow.

I guess I could buy a few fans and a computer powersupply. I'm a bit puzzled as to what I am going to do with the lighting.

So basically I am going to need some sort of board that holds a few light sockets and can be suspended on a chain. What are these called and can I get these at bunnings easily?

Also.. I'm not sure what I am going to do about the seeds. I absolutely hate the idea of ordering them overseas. I don't really have anywhere else where I could pick it up except from home (where I would be growing). Sending it to a mates address wouldn't be very mate-like of me if his house gets raided :yinyang:.

If I were to put a male and female together and grow them, how many seeds should I get from them? I'd like to have quite a lot of extra seeds I could keep in a bottle for 'just in case'.

or am I thinking too far ahead?

Hi Stephen, as a psychology graduate and someone who suffers a little from anxiety I would recommend you do some more research on smoking marijuana. I'm confident you will find that smoking marijuana is far more likely to increase anxiety than reduce it, however I do believe it is a much better sleeping aid than pharmaceutical methods. The choice is yours my friend. Good luck.
