The dealer, Simon Game, 38, was arrested after attempting to send the packages from the post office in Bassingbourn, Cambridgeshire.

After he was identified from CCTV footage, detectives discovered six cannabis plants, worth £2,265, at his home. They also found a small amount of cannabis resin and pounds 800 in cash. Mobile phone records revealed he had arranged deals worth up to £250 with friends.

Game, a student, of Abington Pigotts, Hertfordshire, admitted producing and supplying cannabis and was given a 12-month suspended jail sentence.

He was also given a four-month overnight curfew and ordered to complete 220 hours of unpaid work.

Speaking after the case at Cambridge Crown Court on Wednesday, Miss Oliver, also of Abington Pigotts, said: "The packages were reeking of the drugs but the guy seemed oblivious. He did it two or three times.

"I phoned the police each time and on the last occasion they tracked him down and raided his home. I am happy to have been able to help police stop this trade."

Miss Oliver has since left her job at the post office and is training as a nurse.

Sentencing Game, who has a seven-year-old son, Recorder Karen Walden-Smith said his drug operation "demonstrated a certain lack of sophistication".

Priya Dave, mitigating, said Game was a former heroin user who started growing cannabis last year to supply friends, and used 90 per cent of his produce himself.

He was also expecting a second child and had been trying to send the marijuana to an influential artist in a bid to obtain more work at a local theatre.

Det Con Colin Troll, of Cambridgeshire Police, who led the investigation, said: "We are very grateful to the postmistress for raising her suspicions. We rely on members of the public to be our eyes and ears in the community."
