what would happen if you grow a male plant of say white widow and left it on its own to grow, would all the seeds be white widow like the one it grow from ? similar or something but they would still be classed as white widow ? and would the seeds be much different then the originals that were payed for ? :)

Hi Drummerlars,

these days most of the strains are created so people can't do this. Most of the strains available from seedbanks today are hybrids of hybrids and any attempt to keep the line going as it is is impossible. The only option is to keep the genes of one female as seeds by backcrossing, will which lose the genetic diversity of the plant. Its kinda like copy-protection so people cant go making seeds from there seeds and selling them. Although many companies do this none the less.

If you cross a male and female of a F1 hybrid your seeds will end up more as a mix of the 2 grandparents pheno's then of the grandparents pheno's combined like in the first seeds you started with. But there are a few strains out there which are true breeding. Skunk, blueberry, afghani, etc..... these strains can be used to produce seeds that will be like the parents.

to make the seeds use your best female and a mix of a few good males (to keep genetic diversity.) you can do closed pollinations and keep your buds seedless except for a few buds which will be seeded, there is a few places here where closed pollination methods are described. take a look through the strains and hybridisation forum in the seeds and seedbank section.

Im getting lost here....do you take clones of the mother plant....grow them up and pollinate them thus preserving the integrity of the mother...or do you keep making new mothers and crossing it with them????

Doesnt taking a clone off a clone off a clone dilute the purity?

Howdy,

I see your seeds are NL x WW, that is an F1 hybrid, making seeds from this strain will give very mixed results with few if any of the offspring looking like your original seeds. The only way to preserve these seeds is as a backcross of one female. backcrossing means crossing ww x nl fem with ww x nl male, then grow out the seeds keep say 3 strongest males and cross them to the female used in the original cross you made. then repeat the inbreeding process for a few generations. You will lose the vigour of the original F1 cross though. In the first cross you make, the F2 generation you may find some interesting individuals worthy of backcrossing if you grow out alot of seed.

Anyway the way I recommend you preserve this strain is to swap it with a mate and if you go to jail, get em to have clones ready for you when you get out.

@ field of light

Clone of a clone doesn't get diluted, strains that exist only in clone form are often the most potent strains around and they would all be clones off clones off clones off clones clones that are clones.

I dont really get what you are getting at with the first bit. But if its about backcrossing, which will preserve the genes of one mother plant. Back-crossing can reduce vigour in plants, the best method to breed a plant is just normal selective inbreeding e.g. brother x sister, alot harder than backcrossing.

backcrossing goes like this :

1st gen fem clone A x male clone B (any strain) (50% of mothers genetics)

2nd gen fem clone A x male (A x :D (75% of mothers genetics)

3rd gen fem clone A x male (A x {A x B}) (87.5% of mothers genetics)

etc...... until you get to 99% like Cinderella 99.
