A Nelson man almost blew the door off the room of a Nelson house after accidentally filling the room with gas from an LPG burner he intended to use to consume cannabis, a court was told.

 

Stephen Frost, 36, who was badly burned in the explosion and spent a month in hospital, was sentenced on one charge of possessing cannabis when he appeared in the Nelson District Court yesterday.

 

Police prosecutor Sergeant Graeme Eden said that at 9pm on February 9, Frost was in a downstairs room of the Mount St house. He turned on the tap on his LPG burner, causing the room to be filled with gas.

 

When Frost lit the burner, it caused a huge fireball and explosion that rocked the house and neighbouring properties, Mr Eden said.

 

The door of the room was almost blown off, and Frost was so badly burned he needed skin grafts.

 

Police found 84 grams of cannabis in a plastic bottle and a small cannabis plant growing in a nearby wardrobe. Utensils used to smoke drugs were also found.

 

Mr Eden said Frost admitted cultivating cannabis.

 

Defence lawyer Mark Dollimore said Frost felt that in some ways, the incident had been a little bit exaggerated, but he felt he had been dealt with sympathetically by police.

 

Judge Tony Zohrab said cannabis could affect people's memory, and he wondered if this had caused Frost to forget that he had turned the burner on. Judge Zohrab fined Frost $400, which he ordered to be paid to Marlborough's St Mark's alcohol and drug treatment centre.
