Are these unhealthy sprouts?

Recommended Posts

Are these unhealthy sprouts? I germinated in the rockwool. The water is distilled water with a pH of about 5.8 and I've also included Canna Rhizotonic @ 2mL per Litre.

They are in a propagation tray with a clear humidity dome and placed on a heating mat. The leaves seem to have a kind of a sickly yellow colour. The first sprout arrived about 12 hours ago. As you can see they are all this yellow colour. Any suggestions?

Mate, Chron and LMM both have valid points that would be contributing to the problem, but looking close at your pics I think I may have spotted the real issue.

Those cubes look WAAAYYY too wet ;) you want them just damp, not saturated :peace: . if you can shake some water out without damaging the seedlings I would definitely do that because they are drowning, if you cant then cross your fingers cos I would expect them all to drop dead in the next 48 hrs.

Good luck with them

:peace:

hmm did you pre soak the rockwool in a ph 4.0 solution the rockwoll cubes i here need to be soaked in a lower ph solution due to the high ph of rockwool to get your average of 5.5 - 6.0

Yes, the rockwool was pre-soaked but the solution started with a pH of 5.8. I didn't expect the RW to raise the pH of the solution.

High mate. wave.gif

They look starved of light....and they`re ready to pot up/transplant confused.gif

plus....you only need plain water to crack seeds confused.gif .......i would suggest you wait a week or so b4 adding any rhizo or anything. scratchchin.gif

They may be starved of light. The sprouts were in a dark cupboard. I've read that photosynthesis doesn't occur until the first true leaves appear so I didn't bother. They are now under 2x "cool" 60W fluorescent lights set at 12cm above the sprout. Also the Rhizotonic is gone. Just using plain distilled water now but they don't really need watering.

Ok, I will try to shake out some water. I have also placed a fan directly onto the sprouts to start them drying and i'll stop watering for awhile.

Thanks Heaps to MongyMan and everyone for saving my sprouts with your suggestions.

Attached are photo's of the sprouts about 12 hours after putting them under lights. Using distilled water only and because the temp was mid 20's today the dome was off and lights were an inch away from sprout tops.

For the night, as temps reduce down to low teens I have put the dome back on with all vents open and raised the lights to just over the dome.

Pics attached shows the sprouts greening up and the first true leaves just forming.
