150 people in drug raid over weekend at nimbin

Recommended Posts

hey guys

MORE than 150 drug seizures by police at the weekend's 17th annual MardiGrass event proved many visitors once again tried leaving Nimbin with a bit extra in their bags.

The Rainbow Region's annual coming out parade attracted a staggering amount of tourists and locals alike, but police again had their work cut out for them.

Sniffer dogs based at a 'drug bus' outside Goolmangar Hall on the road to Nimbin helped proceedings, while in town four mounted police covered the event itself.

Duty officer, Inspector Nicole Bruce, said the number of drug busts seemed to be down from last year but there was still the same number of incidents.

The crowds were generally good," Inspector Bruce said.

And we're pleased with the way the events transpired."

Visitors said the crowds produced a relaxed and safe atmosphere with young, old and families coming as supporters of cannabis law reform.

Although some visitors were at the rally specifically to obtain marijuana, the majority of the crowd revelled in the laidback atmosphere and joined enthusiasts of the reform movement.

Kylie Frew, of Nimbin, has attended the event before and continues to go because of the good atmosphere and the positive message the rally sends.

If Government looked at the possibility of legalising marijuana the crime would ultimately be less," she said.

Long-time attendee of MardiGrass, Kalvin Pollock of Brisbane, compared the gathering to an 'Aussie Woodstock'.

Where else can you see all of this for free in a safe, relaxed and calm environment," Mr Pollock said. Another Brisbane resident, Pamela Brown, said she came every year.

It's a very casual atmosphere, very laidback and family oriented, that's why I bring my daughter," she said.

From roadside attractions of Pot Poetry and the Kombi Konvoy to the Hemp Olympix, including the bong throwing, Nimbin MardiGrass had everyone experiencing new things, but not necess-?arily those of the weed kind.

Graham Askey, of Lismore, who is part of the Help End Marijuana Prohibition ( HEMP ) Party was quietly sitting by the Hemp Bar entrance with registration forms for those who wanted to join the reform party.

We've had 60 and 70-year-olds becoming members," Mr Askey said. "Prohibiting marijuana is costing the tax payers millions."

the town was flooded with over 10 thousand people 90% of which were probably carrying/smoking pot and the cops managed to make 150 citations. Well done boys, good work :peace:

I would assume they only really targeted the people riving out of the area rather than smoking in MG itself. It is too much work for them too arrest too many people. took 4 hours too process the paperwork of me having a 50 on me. that is ridiculous.

Any time I go anywhere like that and the narcs with a bark are going to be working I like to throw a bit of pepper around - whole handfuls of it

They don't do too much sniffing when they are busy sneezing and that's them fucked for the rest of the day

No-one likes a snitch... :peace:

Once again it's good to see our tax dollars going to a good cause ;)

A question to the cops that patrol this board, do you honestly feel you are doing the right thing?

I was very close to becoming a cop at one stage. I'm really glad I changed my mind because I would feel like a bit of a tool busting people for possessing a naturally growing plant. Heroin, cocaine, ice etc. I could understand, but a harmless plant?!?!

Unfortunately the police were out with their dogs on roads both north and south of Nimbin. For some reason they seem to pick on the hippy type. People with caravans, and a nice car pulling it were waved on through. Some busts I noticed in town were on loud obnoxious drunken weekend stoners. Other innocent people were randomly pulled over and subject to a strip search, right on the street, in front of everyone. How humiliating. Pity the police could not be like the Polite Force. Anyways the police presence reduced the smell of gunja burning thickly in the precinct. We have become more subversive in our smoking.

The Nimbin Mardi Grass will continue on in the first weekend of May annually. The main feature of the Mardi Grass is the Protest Rally and Parade on Sunday arvo. Mind you lots of other interesting activities all weekend. In fact Nimbin is worth visiting anytime of year. :) View parade youtube Nimbin Mardi Grass
