Some fans just don't handle being slowed down.... some start making a grinding/loud hum even if you slow it just 20%.

 

Often there is a sweet spot, but it varies from fan to fan. Ive tried a primair fan speed controller on 6 fans now, they all react differently.

 

They seem to work better on inline fans, the centri's get the hum/extra noise.
