A GROVEDALE man claimed 26 cannabis plants growing in his backyard were for his own use and would only have lasted him a month.

Wayne Savage also told a court he once smoked half-a-kilogram of the drug in one day.

Savage, of Peter St, Grovedale, pleaded guilty in Geelong Magistrates' Court yesterday to charges of cultivating, possessing and using cannabis.

Police prosecutor, Senior Constable Kerry Moroney said that about 4.20pm on January 22, police executed a drugs search warrant on Savage's home.

She said a one-metre high cannabis plant was found next to a backyard shed and inside there were 26 cannabis plants and 11 clones.

"The shed was fully insulated, had transformers and a power board with an extension lead coming from the house," the prosecutor said.

"Another 17 clones were found in plastic tubs in the rear yard and shoe boxes of dried green vegetable matter were located on the property.

"Savage told police he had been growing cannabis for about six months, was a heavy user and it was for his own personal use."

Brendan James, for Savage, said police had found no signs of trafficking at his client's house.

"There was no evidence of a lavish lifestyle, no cash, no weapons, no records of various comings and goings and no phone messages indicating drug deals," he said.

Savage told the court he had been smoking cannabis since age 12 and on one occasion in his native New Zealand had smoked half a kilo of the drug in one session.

He told the court he sat around on weekends smoking cannabis all day because he had nothing else to do.

When it was suggested by Sen-Constable Moroney that it was a lot of cannabis to be found at his house, Savage replied, "As far as I'm concerned there wasn't enough."

Magistrate Michael Coghlan convicted Savage on all counts and fined him $1200.
