Infrared cops find 10,000 cannabis plants

ALMOST 10,000 cannabis plants have been destroyed by New South Wales Police in a series of aerial drug raids across the state over the past five months.

Worth an estimated $18 million, they were predominantly found in crops spread throughout national parks and on Crown land on the NSW north coast.

Ranging from seedlings to 4m in height, the plants were also found by drug squad detectives across the Central Coast, far south coast, and New England regions.

Detective Superintendent Nick Bingham said 20 people had been charged or issued with court notices over the crops from November last year to March.

"Our main aim is to disrupt the actual supply and cultivation of plants,'' he said in Sydney today.

Many of the crops were in rugged terrain and mountainous regions, with infrared technology used to locate them.

"(Cannabis growers) have tried planting smaller crops and dispersing them over larger areas, in rugged, almost inaccessible terrain in an effort to avoid detection,'' Supt Bingham said.

He believed many of the crops were destined for southeast Queensland and NSW's north coast.

He said there was no evidence to suggest outlaw bikie gangs were involved with growing the crops, but said plants in different areas may have been grown by the same people.

"In one locality you quite often see the same sort of irrigation set up, the same nutrients set up, traps, wiring to indicate its the same person,'' Det Supt Bingham said.

Police cannabis eradication programs have resulted in the seizure and destruction of 100,536 plants since 2001.

Supt Bingham said cannabis was the most commonly used drug in NSW, followed by methamphetamines.

Cannabis can be seen by infrared camers as a signature in a way that makes it stand out from all other plants if you know what frequency of IR to look at and have the toys. most late model IR cameras on the bacon beaters have the toys.

The only plant that can hide them is tomato which you do not find in national parks.

How does tomatoes hide them bruz might be useful to know.. Wish theyd just leave weed be an go looking for the meth labs then u might see a decrease in crime unlike weed.. Be alot less senseless violence going on too if they target the big shit but i guess the bikies an the rest of em either pay em well or the cops are gutless an rather target the more peaceful peoples huh. Isen best mates fight over nothing on alcohol never seen or heard of such a thing involving weed besides the money part but i dont get into that shit

On infrared:

I have an old book called "The Sinsemilla Technique: Inside Americas #1 Homegrown Industry" that uses a lot of cannabis infrared photography. This is because many of the gardens he photographed were so well hidden you could not see the cannabis plants unless you used infrared film. With infrared the plants stick out like dogs balls from the surrounding vegetation. Cultivated cannabis plants appear bright purple in the photos in the book. This is nothing new. The book was published in 1982. Still available now i believe.

"Infrared sensitive film therefore, is a way of measuring the metabolic activity of growing plants. Healthy, rapidly growing plants appear vivid red, while unhealthy, struggling plants appear dull red, green or brown. As they emit no energy, dead plants appear white." -Kayo.
