PURPLE LEAVES

Recommended Posts

Guest bacchus

hi jojo....

outdoor plants that are growing in the cooler months can produce purple stems and leaves due to the temperature.....

aslo i have heard that plants can also show a purple discolouration from mineral deficiency, can't remember if it is phosphorous or nitrogen, but if your plant is otherwise healthy, i would say it is the cold temperature....

cheers

It's a substance called anthrocyanin. :D Well, it's sort of like sunscreen for plants, they produce it when the temps drop low. When the sunlight shines on the plant in the morning, the cells are very, very cold, and the sunlight heats them too quickly and can cause scorching in susceptible strains. So many, many plants, (ever noticed new growth on rose bushes are red/purple? And ever seen a Japanese Maple in autumn? They're completely purple!) use this method of protection.

It wont hurt you, in fact, some think that anthrocyanin production is a good attribute to breed into weed, as it makes the stuff look fantastic! I don't think it affects potency though, unless the added protection the plant gains gives it more time to flower.... Anyone know about this? Show us a pic if you can, let's see this lady in the pixel! lol
