High-tech high-jinx as website hijacked

 

A serial internet squatter who shot to infamy after buying the domain name BindiIrwin.com has been accused of meddling in the upcoming state election by "hijacking" two websites in the names of government ministers to help raise money for the Opposition.

 

The Liberal-National Party claims net prankster Wayne Smith is behind the www.judyspence.com and www.robertschwarten.com websites, discovered by constituents of the furious Queensland Police Minister earlier today.

 

The sites link to a copy of the Liberal-National Party's official homepage, featuring a large picture of a smiling Opposition leader Lawrence Springborg, an LNP logo and a call to "Donate now" to the party.

 

A separate site under the name of the Minister for Housing, www.robertschwarten.com, links to the same LNP webpage.

 

The LNP denies it is behind the prank and claims it does not own the domain names used.

 

Instead, a spokesman said investigations pointed to Mr Smith, who was involved in a battle with party chiefs last year when he beat them to the domain name LiberalNationalParty.org and then posted a fake policy supporting the legalisation of marijuana.

 

"We don't own the domain names, they have nothing to do with us," a spokesman for Mr Springborg said today.

 

However, the Labor Party's state executive has urged Police minister Judy Spence to seek legal advice amid doubts about the websites' origin.

 

"It may or may not be true," a spokesman for the minister said of the LNP's cyber-squatter claims.

 

"It'll be intriguing to see who's really behind it."

 

Ms Spence earlier accused the Opposition of using dirty tricks against her in the run-up to the polls, calling on Mr Springborg to tear down the site.

 

The incident is the latest in what is shaping to be a fierce internet battle for votes at the 2009 poll.

 

Earlier today, it was revealed an LNP staffer had been reprimanded for posting insulting comments about Premier Anna Bligh on a Facebook hate group.

 

Ms Spence said she had been alerted to the LNP political fundraising attempt by constituents.

 

"Constituents have complained to me that when they try to type in http://www.judyspence.com they get Lawrence Springborg's official webpage asking for donations," Ms Spence said.

 

"I have seen some media reports about Nationals candidates using the questionable internet tactics, however it is disgraceful that the Nationals and Lawrence Springborg seem to believe that resorting to dirty tricks like this is going to make the people of Queensland feel that he and the Nationals are ready to govern."

 

Mr Smith, of Brisbane, raised the ire of many Australians when he registered the bindiirwin.com domain name for $6.95 just hours after her father's death in 2006.

 

He has also been linked to a string of anti-Israel websites distributing political propaganda.

I wouldn't get overly stressed about those fascist pollies. Their bark is generally bigger than their bite.

 

Certainly wouldn't have redirected those domains here if there was any danger of OzStoners being charged over it. If Judy Spence wants to come after me in some pivotal court case then good luck to her. But OzStoners can't be accused of political interference any more than LNP.Org.Au can.

 

The whole story is a pile of crap anyway. Modern day reporters rarely know their subject or bother to research events.

 

Politicians have been gunning for dopesmokers for years. Election time is about the only time they ever listen to people. I thought you wouldn't mind the extra traffic but clearly I was wrong and I apologise for upsetting you all.

I agree pretty much... I wouldn't be to concerned about them pollies either. It thought it was a pretty good way of getting a point across in a legal and non violent manner. Just gotta remember some of the stoners around here suffer from a bit of paranoia!

 

I'm not quite sure what everyone is getting upset about. It's not like they don't know that this site exists.
