Study links smoking pot to testicular cancer

Recommended Posts

This one has more posts so I'll just post here.

I read this in a doctor's magazine too. But it said at the end that "much more research is needed" or something like that.

It isn't even a study it's basically a survey.

They did a similar one with brain damage linked to pot smoking I'll try and find it. Just to show a comparison.

AUSTRALIAN research has confirmed (confirmed!?) heavy and long-term cannabis use leads to significant structural brain changes that could be linked to psychotic symptoms and memory loss.

Results of the cross-sectional study revealed smoking more than five cannabis joints daily over a decade exerted harmful effects on brain tissue and mental health – evidenced by structural changes in the hippocampus and amygdala.

The study included 15 male users (the minimum for a proper study is like 40 and most these days go with a number in the hundreds) with a mean age of 39.8 years who met the criteria for long-term, heavy cannabis use and who had no history of polydrug abuse (according to whom?, I bet they used alcohol) or existing neurological or psychiatric disorders.

Using high-resolution structural MRI scans, the researchers demonstrated that, compared to non-users, heavy cannabis users had a reduction in the volume of their bilateral hippocampal and amygdale regions of an average of 12% and 7% respectively.

(this is fuck all compared to what alcohol does)

“The study shows that long-term cannabis users were more prone to a range of psychotic experiences, such as persecutory beliefs and social withdrawal,” said lead researcher Dr Murat Yucel, a neuropsychiatrist at the University of Melbourne.

The cannabis users had progressed their memory loss by around 15 years, which could be likened to the damage suffered by patients with mild traumatic brain injury.

The researchers called for more robust investigations to highlight the effects of long-term cannabis use.

They really shouldn't even publish these sort of things. Especially not with headlines like "Heavy cannabis use harms brain".

And especially not to the public like the article you posted from a newspaper.
