computer UPS?..can it be used?

Hi all!..I was wondering could a computer Uninterupted Power Supply be used on your lighting circuit, not just a a surge and fluctuation protector, but also to run lights or fans or pumps for a short period of time?

Is the idea so ridiculous?...For those with power fluctuations, surges and semi-regular blackouts it might be a cropsaver...Gotta get one for the 'pooter anyway, am told some of the bigger ones can run TV DVD sound system and pooter with no probs for half hour or so...

might get two and put one in my growroom anyway...

If it is rated to supply the amount of power you need for the growroom it will work yes.

Yep it is certainly possible , depending how much power your running and what kind of time you want it to power the system it could bea very costly excersise though

 

have a look at apc's site they have a calculator where you can crunch some numbers and see what your going to need for the period of time your considering

Looking for the weak points in my situation..trying

to nut out problems and solutions before they arise...

 

mainly surges, spikes and 3-20 min blackouts...

enough to keep the grow goin' 'til the genny's pulled out and fired up

 

...now...where can I get a genny...

 

Let you know if the're any use after I got 'em up and going awhile...

starting to get expensive now

there would be a time limit of how long you can maintain power from the batterys till the main supply is restored

gonerened by the storage cappacity of you batterys.

anyting from 20min to 20hrs is possible

after that buy a generator

it works fine

that system is solar powered

Is the UPS not already an inverter...and a battery..that charges itself from the power supply?

..(open to having my ignorance pointed out to me...)

 

expense...yeah, that's a biggie, aint it?

 

The reason for this is to potentially save my grow and equipment...

I'm aware of the problems surges spikes and blackout can have...just trying to come up with

a compromise that will protect my investments..

 

Any suggestions that might make it worthwhile are welcome!

for a computer

for about 20min

the reasoning is

so you can save you work and shut down

it doesnt take much power for that

 

but that is not nuff to power your system, for more that bout 30 sec

if it will even start it.

 

youd need to big it up

and the inverter is over kill --->sign wave and exe

all you want a cheep square wave

unless you wanna run your pc or listen to music as well as your grow roomz

 

the bigest expence to date is the batteries

the more power you need

the more batteries you need

the longer the mains power is down

again the more batteries you need

seen

till someone comes up with a cheeper way to store power

 

and that someone could be ---------->you

now there are electric cars pon the market today

and prices are comming down

won't keep the lights going.... ...but still might keep the peripherals chugging..?

I tried it when i first started growing few months ago- bad idea. You need to get one that is meant to power industrial lights and entire server rooms. The ones meant for your home computer are not meant to be pulling 600watts constantly for extended periods. If you are lucky they will just burn out after a couple hours, if not they will burn down your house. I caught mine just before going to sleep, it was extremely hot and close to burning.
