TWO bus-loads of tourists heading out of Nimbin were stopped at a police roadblock and searched for drugs yesterday afternoon as part of a two-day operation.

About 60 per cent of the passengers had drugs on them.

Police launched the operation on Thursday which included a roadside drug testing van between Lismore and Nimbin, drug dogs and patrols of 'high risk locations', including hotels.

“We also did some other operations in town,” Det Sgt Smith said.

Police said 89 people were searched over the two-day operation and 53 were carrying drugs. Of those 24 were cautioned and 12 issued with notices to appear in court.

The haul included cannabis, cannabis leaf, LSD and amphetamines.

Michael Balderstone, from the Nimbin Museum, said tourists could have been caught by the drug van.

“This is the busiest summer I've ever seen here in Nimbin,” he said.

“We've seen a huge growth in hippy tourism this year.”

Mr Balderstone said he 'felt sorry' for the police working at the van.

Whilst serious crimes are being committed, whilst there are Police No-Go areas in every Australian capital city and many country towns and whilst the public transport systems are rife with theft, assault and vandalism I'm tickle pink to see all of these mug coppers out and about and doing something to make this country a better one to live in! The only pity is that they never used a taser on anyone!

If I go to Nimbin and smoke dope will I ipso facto be a 'hippie'?

Chncilla,

Nimbin has not changed. Don't believe the new reports. You don't really believe the news do you?

There was a phase a few years back where hard-core drugs were being peddled. That's been stamped out for some time now. Now there's just hippie drugs:

Pot

Shrooms

Acid

The report does metion amphetimines. I dare say they refer to ecstasy and I dare say they might have found a tablet, if that.

Nimbin just isn't an ecstasy scene.

Bloody mainstream news!
