An electronic hand-scanning device is helping to keep drugs out of nightclubs.

Police have developed a hi-tech swab which can detect tiny traces of controlled drugs like cocaine, cannabis, heroin and ecstasy. The Ion Track machine is so sensitive it can detect drugs on anyone who has handled a contaminated banknote or shaken hands with a dealer. Police in West Sussex used the device at Thursdays nightclub in Chichester.

Every clubber had their hand scanned on admission to see if they had handled illegal drugs. The managers of Thursdays nightclub volunteered to take part in the operation.

Clubbers were given leaflets explaining the police activity as they waited in the queue.

Police found a small number of clubbers had been handling cocaine before coming to the club and they were searched. They were given warnings but no-one was arrested as no-one had cocaine in their possession.

Inspector Kim Hudson, of Sussex Police, said: 'Thursdays nightclub has consistently worked with police in Chichester to develop measures to combat violent crime.

'They are now working with us to identify the scale of drug usage amongst clubbers so that we can develop effective ways to tackle the problem and help keep people safe.

'Using the Ion Track device we identified the four per cent who had been handling cocaine before coming to the club.

'All these people were searched under the provisions of the Misuse of Drugs Act – no-one was found to be in possession of a controlled drug but the analysis was clear: some clubbers, including those driving to the venue, were taking drugs. This does not come as a surprise but it gives a good indication of the scale of the problem.'

She added: 'We are trying to provide a safe environment where young people can enjoy a night out without becoming involved with the problems created by drug usage and drug dealing. The low numbers found to have handled drugs is encouraging and reflects the overall low levels of crime across the Chichester district.'

...so we will no longer be serving alcohol on the premises.

As for all the cokey heads out there, make sure to use gloves when doing your lines.
