Net may widen for drug drivers

DRUGGED drivers could come under much greater scrutiny if an imminent review recommends roadside drug testing be rolled out to police statewide.

The review will assess whether country police and general duties officers should be able to conduct the tests, as well as traffic police. Only Traffic Enforcement Group officers give the tests.

Experts from Adelaide University's Centre for Automotive Safety Research will travel to Perth this week to do the first stage of the assessment.

The centre is internationally recognised as a leading researcher of road safety.

The $55,000 review, funded by the Road Safety Council's Road Trauma Trust, is expected to be finalised by April and tabled in parliament.

New data from WA Police shows one in 22 people have tested positive for drug driving since roadside testing was introduced in October last year.

Out of 9127 tests, 398 people returned positive results for drugs.

Of those, more than 80 per cent were behind the wheel with methamphetamine in their system. The test kits target THC, the active ingredient of cannabis, amphetamines and ecstasy.

Three-quarters of the testing time was spent in the metropolitan area and one-quarter in regional areas.

Research by the Office of Road Safety shows that about 23 per cent of people killed on WA roads had illicit drugs in their system.

Acting Insp Colin Asplin, of the Traffic Enforcement Group, said part of the review would assess whether the testing system was robust enough to roll out to police across the agency.

Its crap like that leads to missconceptions, now its just bad punctuation but it only takes someone to repeat it then ya have the doo gooders telling thier kids that weed, amphetamines and ecstasy all have the same drug, namely THC.
