reptiles thermometers - a good choice for grow cabinets

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I'm currently in the process of designing my first grow cabinet. I was looking for a thermometer/relative humidity gauge that I could mount on the outside of the cabinet so I could read the conditions without having to open it.

After looking around I could not find anything particularly good. The stuff I could find locally especially sucked.

Then I ran across a reference to reptile habitat thermometers online. Controlling the temperature is very important when it comes to housing reptiles, so their thermometers are pretty well designed and accurate.

I found this which I think will suit my needs perfectly:

It has both a thermometer probe and relative humidity probe, so the unit can be mounted outside the cabinet and the probe cables run inside via small holes. It's the only digital thermometer/hygrometer that has a probe for both the temp and humidity that I've found so far. All the other ones with probes that I've been able to find have only a thermometer probe and the humidity sensor is located on the main unit.

For close to $20 it's not too bad either.

(I couldn't decide which board to post this in, but decided that ventilation and lighting has a lot to do with temps and humidity  )

thats a good idea, also ,, i know a company called oragon scientific and they do Multi-Room Climate Monitors that do temp /humidity , there are 2 components to this ,, a sensor which u put in you grow room and it displays the reading and it also has a remote reciver that u can place in your bedroom for example and monitor your readings there also,,

Nice, that is a pretty fancy thermometer you linked to there. However, it is substantially more expensive than the reptile thermometer, and also it uses a wireless signal to transmit the data. Wireless is pretty cool and useful, but I try to avoid wireless anything whenever possible as I think there are health risks associated with constantly exposing the human body to microwave frequencies (same as cell phones, cordless phones, wifi internet etc.).
