Wayside Chapel says $10.4bn will go on drugs and alcohol

THE head of Sydney charity the Wayside Chapel believes December 8 will be a red letter day for drug dealers as a portion of the Government's $10.4 billion economic stimulus is spent on illegal drugs and alcohol.

The Wayside Chapel's Graham Long, who anticipates some people will spend most of their Government bonus on alcohol, says he is bracing for some "king-sized headaches" after the money is paid out on December 8.

"I don't know the best way to achieve the desired outcomes in this exercise, but I can tell you that this is going to be a red letter day for drug dealers," he said.

"At Wayside, we will be bracing ourselves for some king-sized headaches in the week after Santa Kevin visits."

Mr Long said a discussion on the moral aspects of the economic stimulus package was needed.

"It's just (been presented in terms of) put the money into the system and make the money move," Mr Long said.

"If you give an addict a pile of money, what do you think is going to happen to it?" he said.

Professor Fariborz Moshirian from the Australian School of Business at the University of New South Wales said despite potential negative consequences, "any government stimulus package of this kind should have positive effects on consumption".

He believed most people would spend the money before Christmas, with low-income recipients more likely to spend the money than save it.

"Even if they save it, it boosts the confidence of consumption," he said.

"If you have $1000 in your account and you see an item you would like that costs $300 or $400, you will think, `I still have $700 left'."

Prof Moshirian added it would be difficult for the government to manage any negative results from the $10.4bn stimulus package.

"The issue here is the Government is looking at an aggregate consumption," he said.

"The Government cannot micro-manage a particular stimulus package."

Sigh..

If that is the case, they can only blame themselves (Wayside Chapel ) and the laws that they support..

Another example of journalism that has been to interested in gossip than factual research.

The handout payments are limited to certain recieptents of gubba oops Government payments.

Old age veterans, parents in reciept of family tax benefit part A based on % care and carers (other stimulus packages as well but none for junkies unless they are buying a house).

I'd be getting drugs if they gave me a payment, stock up on smokes, bourbon, beer coffee etc etc etc

i pay tax, i can spend my money on whatever the fuck i want.

maybe i should go out and buy some KFC, or some maccas and get some trans fats into me.

or buy a beer down at the pub with mates. Socializing and drinking alcohol, shame on me.

i should be more like Graham Long, i should question people's judgment and tell them what to do with their money because i'm an arrogant prick.
