Cheech & Chong Higher Than Martin Scorsese

Underwire ...Wired Blog Network

Web traffic numbers are boring. Unless, of course, they can be used to lord over one's opponent ("More unique users on Tuesdays than 4chan!"). Which means, now that Cheech & Chong's MySpace profile has gotten more adds in 24 hours than Martin Scorsese's did, well, it's time to take notice.

The classic counterculture comedians signed up well over 100,000 "friends" in the first day following the relaunch of their page to promote a new tour, according to the social networking site. What this undoubtedly conveys is that Scorsese is falling in popularity as one of the greatest directors of a generation. Or, there are a lot more stoners on MySpace than film buffs. It's hard to tell.

So why do the pair otherwise known as Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong have 170,000-plus friends they didn't have just last week?

Because it's been more than a quarter decade since they took their act on the road. Their Light Up America and Canada tour begins Friday. (Alternate tour names "What's That Smell?" and "Catch Them Before They Croak" were ultimately nixed).

The popularity of the dope-smoking duo's page may also stem from the slow-talking video blogs of Chong (embedded), wherein he opines on everything from Britney Spears to whether or not he still smokes pot.

It's clearly high times for the cannabis couple, known for cult classics like Up in Smoke and Still Smokin.

The pair are also scheduled to do a Secret Stand-Up show at The Roxy in Los Angeles on Sept. 17, and will begin writing blogs on MySpace soon. Unless, um, they forget.
