California to legalize Marijuana?

California finally has a bill in the works that could be passed as soon as this November that would legalize use and sales of marijuana.

Marijuana would still be taxed with a $5 tax to sell an eighth ounce of Marijuana and a $50 tax for the growth of one marijuana plant. If this bill passes, it has many implications, but hardly any of them I see as bad.

Many people fear an increase in the number of potheads if this bill is passed but that is not likely. In fact, the legalization of marijuana may actually decrease the number of potheads.

Back in the 1920s when prohibition was in full swing, alcohol reached the height of its popularity as everyone, including law enforcement officials rushed to get a drink. It also gave rise to Al Capone and a huge band of criminals because the smuggling of alcohol registered such huge profits. There was some thrill for everyone of doing something illegal. I figure right now, its much the same with marijuana, especially among the younger generation. Many kids just do it to look “cool” or to feel like they are older. When the ban is lifted, I bet at least some of these kids will stop.

It will also pull the plug for many drug dealers that depend on selling weed as a vital source of income. Since you can get a license to sell legal weed anywhere, I doubt many people will risk jail just to buy illegal weed. Plus, market competition will force many of these dealers out of business as no one will buy a eighth ounce for $80 when they can get it for $60. The prices will drop to a acceptable market level and the profit for dealers will dwindle into nothing. Overall, I’d say allowing the legal sale of marijuana is a good thing as its not addictive and is no worse for people than alcohol is.

while i hope it passes, i fear that if it does it will prove many a politician right, well atleast in their eyes, that medical marijuana legislation leads to full blown legalization of the drug for everyone. if that happens and it more than likely will considering the american media spin on it all, i believe that california will end up being made an example of by the DEA and that will put the fear into the rest of the states to at most allow medicinal use, but at the same time increase penalties for everyone else lol

I think you are right about the DEA. However this may change when or if Obama gets elected. I've often wondered what would happen if the U.S. stopped the war on drugs? Would other countries follow the lead?

I'd pay a $50 tax to grow a plant. I would grow it much bigger than I do now.

Very likely many would as it's been mostly at the behest of the US govt that the 'war' took on such huge proportions

i think if the usa stopped its war on drugs the entire world would be all like what the fuck and would end up sitting back and taking notes for a few years to see how things work out for them. if the american media were kept honest (LMFAO) and reported that drug use, drug related crimes, prison populations, etc. all considerably reduced the rest of the world would follow suit.

but with the usa's need to wage war on anything and everything they can pick a fight with i dont see the war on drugs ending. i also dont see the media saying drug use has dropped, if anything they would shout out how drugs are killing off society faster than ever and give it more coverage than 9/11 got for months after it happened. anyone who would point out how drug use has fallen and all that stuff would become the new saddam in the medias eyes and since most americans believe everything they see on tv they would quickly vote to make drugs illegal again :D
