Tokyo customs officer 'gives away' cannabis

From Times Online

May 26, 2008

Philippe Naughton

An unsuspecting passenger who flew through Tokyo's Narita airport left with $10,000 worth of free cannabis thanks to a forgetful customs officer and a sniffer dog with an unreliable nose.

The officer stuffed 142g (five ounces) of the drug into the side pocket of a randomly selected black suitcase coming off an overseas flight into Narita yesterday so that the dog could get some practice at detecting drugs.

"The dog couldn’t find it and the officer also forgot which bag he put it in," a customs office spokeswoman said. "If by some chance passengers find it in their suitcase, we’re asking them to return it."

The spokeswoman quoted the unnamed 38-year-old officer as saying: "I knew that using passengers’ bags is prohibited, but I did it because I wanted to improve the sniffer dog’s ability."

He was reprimanded by the head of customs at Narita, Manpei Tanaka, who said: "This case was extremely regrettable. I would like to deeply apologise."

The cannabis, which has a street value of one million yen ($9,680), was in a metal box wrapped with newspapers. Japan strictly prohibits both hard and soft drugs, with people imprisoned for possession of even small amounts of cannabis.

And the band played fuckin on!

This just never ends, the fuckin ridiculous bullshit that this prohibition causes. this is outraegous shit!

In the mid 80s positive evidence was unveiled of customs officers in Indonesia planting dope on passengers. the reward to people dobbng them far outweighed the price of a small amount of grass. So the customs stiff would line up a mate who would point out the bloke after passing customs (and being planted), and they'd split the rewards.

5 oz , and in another country, a different game but a game none the less. They're playing using innocent passengers as pawns. My daughter is flying a lot, working her way around the world, and this is one of the greatest fears i have for her. I've convinved her to stay away from Indo countries ( I think they should be black banned untilt hey lift the death penalty at least. Another contribution to this whole fuckin game from USA was pressuring the indo gov. into handing out death for drug penalties in the 80s also. Bastards!).

We're just fodder.

I wouldn't go overseas without having luggage that could lock like a fortress. So I have to be there when they open it. Might not be a cure all, but it is the min. I could rest with.

UPDATE: A SHOCKED airline passenger has returned a million yen's worth of cannabis that customs staff planted in his bag in a bungled sniffer dog exercise.

An officer at Narita International Airport stuffed 142 grams of the drug into the side pocket of a randomly-selected black suitcase coming off an overseas flight so that the animal could detect it.

"The dog couldn't find it and the officer also forgot which bag he put it in," a customs office spokeswoman said.

"If by some chance passengers find it in their suitcase, we're asking them to return it."

Japan Today reports that the passenger discovered a small metal box containing the cannabis tucked in a side compartment of his suitcase when he got to his hotel.

"The man called police who returned the cannabis to Narita airport", Japan Today said.

The 38-year-old officer was quoted by the spokeswoman as saying: "I knew that using passengers' bags (for sniffer dog training) is prohibited, but I did it because I wanted to improve the sniffer dog's ability."

He was reprimanded by the head of customs at Narita airport.

"This case was extremely regrettable. I would like to deeply apologise," said the airport's customs chief Manpei Tanaka.

The cannabis, which has a street value of one million yen ($A10,100), was in a metal box wrapped with newspapers.

Japan strictly prohibits both hard and soft drugs, with people imprisoned for possession of even small amounts of cannabis.

I know the bastards always over-estimate the value of the grass for their sad little ego spin, but does like 10 grand Australian seem a little excessive for 5 oz? Fuck, damn near get 5 pound for that. Well, definately 3.

hell, I'm going to japan. i can carry enough in my backside to make more than I do here on the pension. :bongon:

just joking of course. crime is far too intense for me. i don't have the "constitution" for it. But gee, if that price is real, it's a wonder why. I mean they kill ya in Indo, and I can't say what they pay for it there, but it wouldn't be that much would it?

Anyone been to Japan, and know, or know from a mate or anything like that at all?

Shithey, I wonder why? Like Indonesia is no slouch on penalties, and USA is radical. And so much boat traffic in the area. I wonder if it has to do with the high denisty population,. Simply nowhere for outdoors growing to speak of, and everyone living in each other's lap.

Like the "cottage industry" of indoor growing in Aus, it's just amazing how much that has effected the whole scene. Take that away I suppose, like the poorer of the population not able to grow in their closets and so forth...might make a big impact hey?
